Meet your guide in the heart of Vatican City to begin your walking tour of one of Rome’s most legendary landmarks. Starting in St Peter’s Square, walk over to St Peter’s Basilica, listening to stories from your guide about baroque sculptor and architect Bernini, who designed the square. Pause to check out a fountain and 13th-century Egyptian obelisk before arriving in front of the church.
Enjoy fast-track entry to the basilica with your No Wait Access, allowing you to go straight inside the spectacular structure, said to be built upon the site where St Peter the Apostle was crucified. Throughout the centuries, the humble church grew into the ornate icon it is today—the holiest of Roman Catholic sites. With your guide, walk around to see Renaissance art like Michelangelo’s La Pietà sculpture, as well as his cupolone—St Peter’s famous dome.
Admire mosaic works, see a statue of St Peter, visit the tomb of Pope John Paul II and stare in wonder at Bernini’s baldacchino, the elaborate canopy alter that sits above St Peter’s tomb. Your tour ends inside the basilica, where you may continue exploring independently, if you wish.
St. Peter's Square
The most famous and the biggest square of the Vatican City. It is from here that you may see the Pope blessing. In the middle of the huge square enjoy the Obelisk from Egypt (over 2500 years old)
This was one of the highlights of our holiday. The only negative was trying to find the guide at the start of the tour. With thousands of people around this was not easy. We were late when we eventually found someone. From there the tour ran smoothly. Our tour guide in the Basilica was bery informative.
We toured the Basilica with my 82 year old aunt, which we anticipated to be a challenge. Julia was a wonderful guide... easy to follow, relaxed and very knowledgeable. At times, she hesitated translating her presentation to English, but she was very conscientious. The tour brought the Basilica to life for our first-time visitors.
If I could rate this higher than 5 stars I would. Our guide Michele was fantastico! He gave us an English and Italian narration of all the beautiful locations. He was a great captain and we were all comfortable and safe on board. Our ages range from 11 to 70 and every single one of us had a wonderful time. The views are beautiful and the water wad bluer than the sky! Michele went out of his way to keep us engaged and happy. The on board “happy hour” was a pleasant break from snorkeling and swimming!
