To begin your Island adventure, meet your private guide at Sorrento’s Marina Piccola port and board a shared jetfoil ferry to arrive on Ischia. The largest island in the Gulf of Naples, it was formed by a volcanic eruption and is known for its geothermal properties like natural hot springs. When you arrive, a private car will be waiting to whisk you around, stopping first at a lovely garden café for Italian coffee and a cream-filled sfugliatella pastry.
Properly caffeinated, head next to Ischia Ponte — a rocky islet connected to the main island by a narrow causeway. Explore the town of Celsa, dominated by the mysterious clifftop Aragonese Castle where centuries of battles and courtly intrigue have played out high above the gulf. Taste seasonal produce at a local fruit and vegetable stand, and sink your teeth into fresh-baked bread with mortadella salami at Ischia’s oldest bakery.
Get a different perspective on the towering castle from Cartaromana Beach, and then head for the hills in Fontana, the island’s tiniest and highest village. Settle into a table at a restaurant built into a giant slab of green rock for a lunch of freshly made pasta with wine, followed by a traditional Italian dessert of sweet vin santo and gelato in the quaint fishing village of Sant’Angelo. En route, be sure to notice a geothermal fumarole spewing clouds of vapor. The surrounding waters and naturally heated sand have been used since ancient Roman times for healing and culinary purposes.
After a full day on the island, say farewell to your driver back at the port, and travel with your guide via ferry back to Sorrento, where the tour concludes around 5 pm.
