What To Expect

During this excursion, which starts on the St Isaacs square and ends on the “Ploshad Vosstaniya” square, we will cover different aspects of life in Leningrad during the siege of the city in World War II. You will learn how the luxury hotel Astoria served as a hospital, how the high spire of the Admirality building was hidden behind camouflage, how the Winter Palace was damaged by artillery fire, and how the treasures of the Hermitage museum were packed and shipped out just in time before Leningrad became completely surrounded. Walking along the Nevsky Prospekt the guide will also show what people needed to take into consideration when the wanted to do the same during the siege of the city. Included in the price is also a guided tour in the Leningrad defence and blockade museum.

As the stories and explanations can sometimes go into detail, it is helpful to have a basic knowledge of modern history.

We keep the groups small in order to give everyone a chance to ask questions. Discussions are welcomed.

An excellent history tour. Our guide...
Kim S
, May 2018
An excellent history tour. Our guide, Roman, was very informative around the topic of world war II and made the tour enjoyable and insightful, despite the many sad stories that were told. The 4 hours walking wasn't hard, the pace was gentle, with plenty of stops to discuss places of interest. The stop at the cafe for a drink was very crowded, so we popped around the corner to get faster service and a seat. Highly recommended.
