Good tour to get out of Thessaloniki...

Good tour to get out of Thessaloniki for the day. Baptistry of Lydia was a small little shrine and a church, but the guide gave very thorough explanations of the church and told many interesting stories. We went to the museum ticket paid separately where the guide showed us some highlights then we headed off to Theatre of Philippi to see the ruins and the prison of Paul and Silas. Lunch at Kavala, must be a very popular restaurant for lunch beside the waterfront. Lots of people around that weekend due to Orthodox Good Friday holiday. Then off to Amfipolis and the little museum paid separately to see Byzantine and Macedonian works. AGain the guide gave us a lot of explanation. My only gripe is that we were given too little time to walkabout the museums that we had to pay separately to go in. It's nice that the guide showed us the highlights but perhaps it was a little too rushed. Also I was travelling with a pair that had been with the same guide for the past 4 days, they were very nice but at times it felt like I was an outsider trying to fit in. The guide knew their likes and dislikes having been with them for so long so she might have tailormade the tour to be more suitable for them. Its not a big deal, just a note that you might be joining an existing group tour that have been together since Athens.

The tour ended up being an intimate affair with the guide and another traveller, so we were flexible to spend the time we wanted at various locations. I was pleased the agency contacted me the day before with confirmation of meeting place and time. We had the bonus of visiting the Baptism site of Lydia near Philippi because we were interested in going. The hosted lunch was at a beautiful seaside restaurant on the edge of Kavala. The tour met all my expectations. The site of Philippi remains mostly unexcavated so keep this in mind as far as expectations. Nonetheless, some things are impressive.
