Belle and Alice from Crossing...
, sep 2017
Belle and Alice from Crossing Vietnam, gave us a superb evening of street food dining in this amazing city. The food was wonderful. The two girls were considerate and had plenty of information to share with the 4 of us on this walking tour. It is not too long 2 of us are in late 60s to walk, and ends in the Night Markets.
This tour was great due to the lovely guide called Belle. Belle navigated us through the streets of Hanoi and introduced us to some places to eat that we would not have considered on our own. Belle is a lovely person and her English language skills are fantastic- I did feel that we'd actually made a new friend rather than she was just our guide. However, both my husband and I felt that we could have managed to see the Night Markets independently and we did feel slightly rushed around. This tour is perfect for anyone who wants to see the Night Markets and wants the extra reassurance of a local guide.
Multiple things contributed to a Two star Rating , and let me share them with some perspective .
First and Foremost, it is simply a Street food tour. The night market is just an add on, and if you plan to shop, or get a sense of the marketplace in Hanoi, then this is not the trip. Anyway the night market, is also nothing to write home about. Just cheap and low quality trinkets and souvenirs.
The tour itinerary has to be more transparent. It is walking tour , hotel pick up is on foot, and only if your hotel is within the old quarters. I got an email from the local vendor, only a day prior to the tour, that I had to meet them at their office, as my hotel is to far off for a hotel pick up. If one is not checking emails or does not have data connection, I would have easily missed the tour. It would help if the tour would specify the distance for hotel pick up
Also, It was my first time in the city and with a young child. I definitely did not feel comfortable taking a taxi in the evening and late night, not because Hanoi is not safe, I think it is , but simply it is not easy to navigate around . Locals hardly speak English, no Directions in English and just that much difficult to get by. So having chosen, what I thought was a guided tour from the start, turned out very differently.
In the actual tour , sampling street food is the highlight. The guide had already pre selected the places , and recommended the food. This is quite convenient, as anyway the tourist would not know. The food was good and well recommended, like Fresh Spring rolls, Savory filled Doughnuts, Vietnamese noodles, followed by local deserts like Sticky rice in ginger sauce and fruits in condensed milk and ice.
The problem were the eateries selected. They were very small, almost hole in the wall eateries. They were very messy , with tissues and food lying around, and I was concerned about hygiene and cooking conditions all the time. While I was not looking for fine dining, it is after all street food, but one would require a bit more standard places. I could not risk the water, and prefered only well cooked food.
There were no standard sitting arrangements , just tiny stools and a higher stool for table, and electric wires run over your head. The places are quite run down, and whatever be the local charm and flavour, does not give any comfort.
On a Viator tour, I definitely expect good standards and quality, as we book for families and children.
On the positive side, out tour guide Hannah was friendly, and accommodated requests. This is definitely not a tour for vegetarians , vegans or other such special dietary requirements. It is truly off the street food , which is best enjoyed if you take away and sit in the comfort of your hotel room, or by the lake in Hanoi.
So no, I would not recommend this tour .
If you have a short time in Hanoi, just wander about lake, look into shops that stay open till late night, and eat from standard places, which are many.
This was probably our most favorite tour out of them all. Ellie picked us up at our hotel which was way out of the old quarter in a lovely comfortable vehicle. She took us to the coolest places to taste local cuisine and beer. We had a chance to see parts of the city we didnt know existed and to get amazing food from places we could never have found on our own. Our guide was awesome in helping us make better purchases in the night market place and all in all we ate and laughed and walked and shopped and had the best time ever. I would highly recommend anyone going to Hanoi to do this tour. I would also make sure you ask for Ellie or Rose if you want the best of the best taking you around Hanoi.....
