I thought first time to Hong Kong so I hope everything works out right since it's the first time I was dealing with Viator. I followed the instructions upon arrival to Hong Kong, after Customs go out exit A and a driver will be waiting with a sign with your name on it. There were two exits, A and B. Went out exit A as instructed, no one there. Walked back to look again for a sign, no sign. Tried calling the contact number twice on my cell, didn't work. I asked information at the airport and was told that it was not a Hong Kong number. Looked in all my paperwork again and found another number for the taxi. Cell phone (AT&T International Plan) still did not work. Asked information for help and said that there are courtesy phones for local calls for free against the wall. Called the number and finally got a hold of the taxi driver. He said he was waiting all this time with the sign, only he was waiting at exit B. He apologized and we were on our merry way to the hotel. Checked in and found that we had a tiny room with a queen size bed. Room was extremely narrow, barely enough room to pull out luggage through. The closet was so tiny that the hangers had to be hanged at a 45 degree angle in order for the door to close. Went to the front desk and showed them the viator letter stating that I would have the option of a king size bed or two doubles and that I would get a room on the upper floors of the hotel and one of the newly refurbished rooms. The room was on the 10th floor, rooms started on the sixth out of 20 floors. The front desk said this is the room that was ordered for you. He said if I wanted I could pay extra and receive a larger room with a king size bed. I remember reading the instructions from viator saying do not pay for anything extra so I declined, went back to my room and went to sleep so I could get up for the tour the next morning. After the second day, I decided to talk to the front desk again who once again said that this was the room that was ordered by viator for us. That's when I decided to call viator. They arranged it so that we could get a king size bed, upper floor, and larger room. Also, got a regular closet to hang up our clothes. The breakfast buffet was great. Chinese Dim Sum, Japanese noodles, American breakfast, danish, fresh fruit, coffee (very strong), and fresh juices was available.Kevin was a great help in resolving our problems. He was available 24 hours a day. Overall tour was great and had a great time.
Overall, we do not think that the 5-Day Hong Kong and Macau Tour was worth what it cost. By the end of the trip, we discovered that we had dealt with five different companies. We booked through Viator, then someone from Leisure Tours contacted us, the man who scheduled the private transfers works for China Travel Services the driver was always different and not sure who they worked for, and then the tours in Hong Kong and Macau were subcontracted to Grayline and Estoril respectively. We found that the more people that were involved, the easier it was for them to plead ignorance when things weren't what we expected. However, Kevin, with Leisure Tours, was very responsive and helpful scheduling the trip. He answered all my questions promptly and courteously. The tour in Hong Kong that was described on Viators website, that we thought we were paying for, included lunch at the Jumbo Floating Restaurant. Instead, when we received our itinerary, we were given two complementary rickshaw open top double decker bus tickets that we could ride and hop on and off for the remainder of the day. We were led to believe that the bus was a better deal than the lunch, but you will only get two one way tickets for the busgood luck with finding the bus and finding your way back. INSIST ON THE LUNCH.
We thought the highlights of the tours were the Peak Tram in Hong Kong and the Macau Tower. The hotels that were reserved for us and the turbo jet ferry that we were put on from Hong Kong to Macau were adequate. The Eaton Hotel in Hong Kong had nice rooms but the lobby and entrance were under construction. The Sofitel in Macau was a nice hotel but it was not located near the other hotel/casinos. The meals that were included were breakfast at the hotels and one buffet lunch in Macau. We thought the food was good at both places.
The reason we booked the tour was because we were concerned that we may not be able to communicate well enough to get around on our own, but English was widely spoken both in Hong Kong and Macau. Hindsight, we could have scheduled our own hotels, tours, etc.
The tour is worth doing, anyway. The organization was very good, it worked always with every guide / hotel / activity. Also there was enough leisure time to enjoy the cities by ourselves. Many thanks for smooth process of the journey!
The only thing I would maybe optimize for all travellers who arrive in Far East from Europe is the sequence/duration of the activities. Since all the flights arrive in the morning, it would be better to organize a early check-in on the first day in Hongkong, notwithstanding a potential higher price. It would give the traveller an opportunity to systemize himself/herself after a long flight and to plan the first leisure day better.
The second day - great thanks to our best ever guide Ross - is very rich on experiences, we learned much and it was optimally organisied.
The third day we experienced the same as on our first: due to the impossibility to check-in earlier in Macau we were constrained to walk around in the city with all the "cabin luggage" till 15:00. As Macau is very small and all points of interest one can see within 5 Hrs (as prooved on our 4th day there), it might be better to involve the travellers in the sightseeing tour immediately upon the arrival with the ferry: so the early-checkin in the hotel can be avoided (economized) and the day can be put actively at the disposal. In this case the day 4 can be used for leisure and the ferry back to Hongkong can be taken already in the evening of the day 4.
I strongly believe, that the described 4-day-version would be completely sufficient. An option to prolong might be offered separately.
All in all I am glad to have gained this experience with you and with Hongkong and would anytime reccomend your services to my friends. Thank you very much!
