Booked the behind the scenes beer and brewery tour. The tour said it was in English. Upon boarding the tour guide gave info in German then in English. Which we found strange on a supposed "English" tour but hey we are in Germany! You actually only go to Spatan Brewery. The others are just drive by. Upon getting to the brewery the guide at the brewery said the tour was in German then he would explain it in English. ???? On a tour listed as English??? Out of 20 of us only 3 spoke English, myself, my husband and one other. I even went back and looked at my confirmation to see if I booked a German tour by accident, nope, English. The guide at the brewery's English was not great but he really tried. My husband works in a brewery so we were able to follow along. Had he not we would have been totally confused. Both guides tried to accommodate however an English speaking tour should be just that.
I feel to much time was spent on the bus trying to get the microphones working, it delayed our trip. We lost time that I'd have rather spent at the brewery. When we finally got to the brewery we felt like we were rushed through and didnt receive the Paulaner bottle opener that your add states we would receive, a little disappointed
This tour is a scam. The tour claims you will visit multiple breweries for behind the scenes looks. However, it turns out that several brands three are brewed at the same location and they consider that multiple breweries. In addition, they are all owned by mega-conglomerates and it is just a lot of marketing. We signed up for the tour in English, on the day of the tour it was half German and half English. The German speakers were treated extremely better than the English speakers more anecdotes were told in German and I felt our guide felt a burden when needing to followup with the English speaking group. As a result, this makes the English speaking group wait their turn and then have less time to explore -- I even mentioned this to the tour guide because we had substantially less time to view the bottling line which is by far the neatest part of the tour!. Our guide shrugged and kept moving us along. Lastly, the tour was to include a souvenir bottle opener, which was not handed out, nor was the guide even understanding us when we asked about it at the end.
The tour that we received did not meet the description provided what so ever. My husband and I booked this tour because the tour was supposed to be a tour of several breweries and see their beer-making facilities, including fermenting tanks and malting towers. Specifically, the description states that you will visit Spaten, Franziskaner and Löwenbräu and that the tours will be led by experienced master brewers.
As opposed to what is listed above and what was listed in the description at the time that we booked, we instead had an approximately 45 minute tour of the city in which we drove around on the bus and the tour guide explained about the Reinheitsgebot and the requirements for a brewery to serve beer at the Oktoberfest. Information was also provided about the various breweries in Munich. The 45 minute tour was in place of a drive directly to a brewery that would have taken 10 minutes. After the 45 minute tour was completed, we visited 1 brewery which just so happened to be one location that brewed for the three different brands mentioned in the description. This in and of itself is very misleading, since the description states take a guided tour of each brewery to see their malting towers, brewhouses, fermenting tanks, beer cellars and wells. This phrasing leads you to believe that it will be 3 separate locations, but, in actuality, it is just one location.
Additionally, the tour is not conducted by an experienced master brewer. Instead, the tour is led by a student from the local brewing school. Additionally, the description states that it is a 3 hour tour which was insufficient time for everything that was supposed to be covered during the tour. The actual tour of the brewery was shortened to ensure that we stayed within the 3 hour window. The only thing that met expectations and fulfilled the description was the beer sampling and Bavarian pretzel.
All of this being said, the individual that led the tour within the brewery was very well informed and explained the process very well, but it was still a let down because the expectations that we had based on the description were not met.
When we presented our vouchers to the guide working, she told us the tour was full and that we wouldn't be able to attend even though we purchased the tickets prior. They did allow us to join, but there were only 5 of us that spoke English with a group on 30 who spoke German.
The tour took a short trip around Munich city center while the guide told about the origins of the beer culture and octoberfest in Munich and Bavaria. After that we were led on an extensive tour through the Spaten brewery followed by a beer tasting session in the tower of the brewery the highest lookout point in Munich open to public. The tour was very informative and enjoyable, and recommendable to all who like history and beer.
