This a Not to Miss part of Rome - tour guide was Angela who had a great knowledge of the site and history in general. Easy train trip to Ostia and enjoyable walk around the main parts far better than Pompeii Less tourists and better preserved ruins - then left to get the train back to Pyramid Station which was good so you could spend has much time after the tour walking around this wonderful site.
Our tour lady kindly gave a fellow tour person 10 euro after he found he had been pickpocket at Rome train station and left with no wallet which was such a generous thing to do.
Suggest when you get back to Pyramid station go across the road and visit the Non Cathoic Cemetery where Keats is buried
Laura is wonderful - knowledgeable, articulate, and very dedicated to her tour participants having a great experience. Our tour was in early September and the humidity was very high coupled with a fair amount of walking, and when some of us who are older become dragged out, she made sure we got a good break the cafeteria at the Ostia site has a lot to offer. Good short train ride, amazing ruins and mosaics, etc. Highly recommended!
Think we were in same group as Teoman D, if so, we would repeat the same comments and compliments! Asha our tour guide really made the difference with her vast knowledge, personality, wit, humor, and organization. She took the time to meet every member of the group individually (on the train ride) to get to know us. We took other tours with good tour guides but Asha definitely stands out on her own. Grazie mille Asha!
We decided on this tour after the Roman couple which gave us a pasta making class recommended it and after we did the usual tours of the Colosseum, Vatican etc. It turned out to be the highlight of our trip. I cannot overemphasize how spectacular a job Asha, our tour guide did. Her enthusiasm and knowledge were inspiring.
We were met at the Metro stop by her, given our train tickets and she herded our small group onto the train for a relatively short trip to Ostia Antica. The organization was superior. Once off the train, it is a short walk to the ancient site, where we started with the crematoria on the edge of the site and worked our way through a portion of the remainder of the site, which includes an amphitheater, bath houses, a forum, home sites, an area where the grain was grounded, where ancient ovens once resided, and the list goes on. I truly cannot give it justice but Asha sure could. Afterwards, you can stay as long as you want and catching the train back on your own is ridiculously simple. In many respects, this tour was better than the Colosseum/Vatican/Pantheon.
Asha, who is from Wales and was a History major, takes the time to answer all questions and her enthusiasm is really contagious. I not only would encourage every one who visits Rome to take this tour, but make sure you an have Asha as your tour guide!
Wow, loved this Tour! Ancient Ostia is so overlooked it's crazy. This place is a must for anyone, huge place and so well preserved. You could literally spend all day there, there's that much to see! Natasha our guide was amazing, very friendly, and made you feel welcome and a part of the group. Extremely knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic, you can tell she loves her job and that makes a big difference so thank you! She leaves you wanting more! Loved the experience, amazing place and would do it again for the whole day next time! Don't miss this Tour!!!
This tour was great and our tour guide Laura was exceptional! She was so knowledgeable and made the tour so fun! On the way back to Rome, she also talked to us about the rest of our trip and recommended places, restaurants, etc. that we needed to visit - she definitely went above and beyond. As for the actual ruins of Ostia Antica, it was amazing visiting and hearing the history of the ruins.
First of all compliments to the company. There was a train and bus drivers strike and in stead of cancelling the tour they made alternative plans to let the tour continue. Ostia was fascinating and I would recommend this tour to anybody but most of all to anybody with and interest in Roman history
