My husband and I had a wonderful time on our trip from Milan with our tour guide, Renzo Durini , from Your Travel Diary. We were happy that even though it was just the two of us that our tour was not cancelled like our Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Rome Your Way Tour Company. Renzo met us at the train station in Milan and we traveled by train to Varenna. He was quite knowledgeable about the area. Lake Como is beautiful and the boat ride around the lake was wonderful. It was a delight to see the towns of Varenna, Bellagio, and Tremezzo. I loved the Villa Carlotta and the gardens were beautiful. However, when we were there on June 11 the flowers, such as the azaleas and roses, were no longer in bloom. I really enjoyed our tour with Renzo and would like to return to Lake Como to see some of the other Villas located around the lake. I would recommend this tour to everyone and even told my travel agent to recommend this tour to their clients.
My husband and I were the only ones who showed up, but the tour went anyway. That was great. Our guide Renzo Durini was very knowledgeable. We arrived in Varenna before the stores were open, so I would have skipped that. I was not interested in the architecture of the several churches in Varenna. Time would have been better spent getting on the boat on Lake Maggiore to Villa Carlotta. Interesting Villa and Renzo had a lot of info about the background. Had enough time to visit the Villa but not the extensive gardens. Next back on boat to Bellagio- I loved Bellagio as I am a shopper. Good recommendation for lunch in Bellagio. Time to shop in Bellagio and back on boat to Varenna to get train to Milan. My changes would be skip Varenna. Go straight to Bellagio- it was better. Eat a snack or lunch at 5 star Grand hotel in Tremezzo after Villa Carlotta. Then I would do boat to Como and either stay overnight there or get train/bus back to Milan. Not sure if all that fits into a day, but I missed not seeing anything of Como environs. I would have been ok getting back to Milan later in the evening if I could see some of Como. I also like to visit 5 star hotels and get a glass of wine there or a pastry. I do appreciate Renzo giving me enough time to shop in Bellagio.
This full day 10 hours or more round trip is well worth it. The lake is beautiful and the towns are charming. Our guide, Renzo Durini, was born in Como and now lives in Milan and knows the area and its history extremely well. He is also knowledgeable about Italian history and politics generally, so the hour train trip back and forth from Milan was also well spent. Renzo caters the trip to the tastes of the customers. We were able to spend more time enjoying the art and gardens of the Villa Carlotti in Tremezzo, but, if we had preferred, we could have spent more time shopping in Bellagio. Renzo knows a lot about both places--where to eat, where to shop, what is notable about the works of art. We could have made the train trip by ourselves, but would have missed half of what was notable about the area without Renzo's guidance. If you have time only for a day trip to Lake Como, this tour is definitely worth it.
