The coach ride
Although Milford sound is the target, but the road trip is still worth mentioning as it took up most of the time in the trip (aprox. 8 hours return). I had an informative and experienced coach driver as my guide. As included in the itinerary, we stopped over a couple of spots including the Fiordland National Park which, according to what my friends who took part in other trips said, may not be included in every Milford Sound tours. Another perk of the trip is that we had the driver walked us through every spots and told us about the places, so we were not left alone wandering purposelessly. Maybe it's my personal preference, but it's always better to have an option. The coach was very clean and comfortably ventilated. It was also well-equipped with wide glass windows by the sides and the roof and heaters as well as adjustable leather seats (I could be wrong in terms of the last point as this is written nearly a month after the trip).
The boat trip
The cruise was shared with tourists from other tours. There were free beverages and snacks. The staff were nice and helpful and helped me took a handful of pictures on board and after I got off as I was travelling alone. Just it would be better if passengers are reminded to look after their children and not to block the aisles as there were children making loud noises and moving the cushions behind the door and I alomst tripped over as I entered the cabin.
It was well-planned. I like that we would stop at a cafe around 2 hours after departure for some breakfast or buying some food for lunch. That means you can skip breakfast before catching the bus that is departing at 630 in the morning. I had the lunch included in my package. I would recommend the lunch for those who enjoy eating picnic food. Don't get me wrong, it was a rich lunch box including fruit, juice, desserts, snacks and some pastries to munch on. But those who prefer hot food better buy it in the cafe of just simply have a big breakfast there as I don't remember there was any microwave oven on the boat and your food probably cooled down before you arrived at the terminal. And since I personally think that the best way to experience Milford Sound is going out to the deck and experience the wind and the mist, and in fact you can't expect that the windows are clear because of the waves, I don't recommend spending TOO much time having meals on board.
Coach driver was very pleasant and lovely which made me comfortable the whole trip with him. some stops were very rush of time but it was understandable because Milford Sound is the ultimate destination.
Overall, the tour was good. We liked the tour guide's explanation on our way to Milford Sound as well as the scenery. We stopped on a few beautiful places along the way. However, there were some hiccups for the pickup location. As according to the customer service staff, we supposed to be picked up at the nearest bus stop to the AJ bungy at 6.45am but we could not see the bus. therefore, we walked towards Athol St. As we could not see our bus after the timing mentioned, we decided to call the customer service staff again and explained our situation. The customer service staff promptly made arrangement to board us on another bus and at Te Anau, we managed to catch up with our original bus. It is advisable to check correctly with the customer service staff and confirmed the pick up location name.
It's a bit long of a busride, but totally worth it. The Captain of the boat took us under a couple of the falls and even filled a bucket with water from one of them so you could see and taste the water fresh off the fjords.
One of the best parts about this trip is definitely our driver! He introduces everything about Queenstown and NZ to us, plays us enjoyable music and movie, and sings for us! Scenery at mirror lake and Milford Sound is extraordinary. However, the drive takes about 4hours heading to Milford Sound and another 4hours to return. I would recommend a helicopter arrangement if you have the budget - so you do not waste too much time on transportation.
