The basics

Dive into Brazil’s African history and heritage at the museum, where exhibits cover Afro-Brazilian art, history, and ethnography. Follow old maps that charter the route of the slave ships; admire traditional masks, jewelry, and clothing; and discover cultural traditions from pottery-making to unique musical instruments. Notable highlights are the exhibits on Capoeira martial arts and the Candomblé religion, the latter of which includes a series of 27 carvings by Bahian artist Caribe.
