The trip was wonderful however, we spent most of our time traveling. The food on the boat needs a lot of improvement. The hiking to the Monkey Island wasn't bad however, I was expecting to see more monkey in the jungle. The drive back from Ha Long Bay to Ha Noi was horrible. The air conditioner didn't really work so everyone on the bus was sweating like crazy. In addition, to tour guide didn't do a lot to inform us of what is going on when there was a traffic accident ahead so everyone didn't know why the driver stopped the car.

3-Day Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall Tour from Hanoi | mar 2020
An excellent trip. A lot of time on the road, but that was balanced by by the highlights. Just us and another couple on this trip. If you’ve already done the Sapa area, this will give you a very good feel for the NE. Homestays lovley and everyone very friendly.

3-Day Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall Tour from Hanoi | ene 2020
We used Mr Linh's adventures for this tour and it was absolutely breath taking! The first day we saw the old french war post and the mothers temple, among other things, we then stayed in a homestay over night with a lovely family hosting us all. Fay two saw us going to a magnificent cave and the Ban Gioc Waterfall both places had very few tourists and it was most just our group of 5 of us, we then travelled to Ba Be National park and stayed in Mr Linh's homestay right on the lake! It was breathtaking. Day three started with early morning kayaking before breakfast and then saw us take a boat trip through the lake, down the rivers, through a cave and a walk through a small village. Again everything was so peaceful and we were virtually the only people there! Amazing experience that everyone needs to have!

3-Day Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall Tour from Hanoi | nov 2019
What can I say fantastic tour value for money. This tour is a must for people who want to experience the home stay with a local family. 2 nights 3 days packed with beautiful sights and scenery and a very warm welcome from the local family at the Home Stay at night, the food throughout our tour was excellent especially at the Home Stay. We had a group of around 15 people a great bunch really friendly and we had lots of laughs along the way as we covered around 800km. A special thank you to our very knowledgeable tour guide Nha who could not do enough for us all on our trip, I would defiantly recommend this trip if you want to see the authentic north of Vietnam.

From start to finish, Long (our guide), was on point with great story telling and historical facts and explanations as well as answers to all our questions about Vietnam. Amazing homestays, especially the first one, and great little detours! Much better than we expected!

6-Day Off The Beaten Track Tour of North Vietnam from Hanoi | sep 2017

I was a bit nervous about this tour but as soon as I met Bao and Minh our driver and tour guide all fears were put to rest. It was one of the most amazing tours I have been on. I wont go in to detail on all that we experienced but to highlight a few experiences we had The first day after a long day we stayed at a stilted house with a Tay family, they cooked the meal and we sat round and ate with the family a wonderful meal freshly cooked and shared with such graciousness, this set the theme for the whole six days, Vietnam is a wonderful country with kind generous people and living a life of subsistence on very little resources. My highlights would be the Tay family, the waterfall on the Vietnam China border, staying at the Incense village and swimming in the lake oh and one more going fishing with Minh and of course the fish I caught was huge. Dont take my word visit Vietnam take this tour and I hope you enjoy it as much as me and my wife did.

3-Day Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall Tour from Hanoi | mar 2017

This was an awesome add on at the end of a several week group tour. I think the description is underrated. While the time in the van coming and going on the first and third day is long, the experience is remarkable, driving through local villages with great commentary on the different native tribes. Ba Be Lake is remarkable and included the visit to a cave. The following day after about a 4 hour drive we got to the Ban Gioc Waterfall and had a boat ride to get up close to the falls. This is on the boarder with China and part of the river and falls belong to China so at some point on the boat trip we were in China. About an hour later we traversed through a remarkable cave about a mile walk in the cave.
We were fortunate that it was only my wife and I on this tour so it was a private tour in a van with our own driver and guide for the entire 3 days. Our guide, Hugh Uie in Vietnamese was EXCELLENT. When we'd stop for lunch or dinner included along the way, they'd sit with us and order food for the table and we'd all eat together. We were always very pleased with the local restaurants and the food. It was a great way to learn about local foods, which are different in this far northern part of Viet Nam from other parts. There were bathroom stops about every two hours along the way. The first night we stayed at Mr. Linh's Homestay, an interesting local place. We had about a half mile walk through rice fields and a pasture to get to the homestay. Our luggage was delivered another way, using a motor bike. The bedrooms are on the second level and the dining area is on the main level. We had a nice room with a quality king sized bed and a small dresser and air conditioning. Bathroom facilities are shared. You walk outside your room onto a porch and then past about five rooms to take a BIG step down to two toilet/shower rooms. Dinner and breakfast are included and served at a specified time. You sit down in the dining area and they bring you whatever food has been prepared. The food was good, but unremarkable. I don't recall the dinner items. Breakfast was rice pancakes and fruit and coffee or tea. One interesting bathroom feature at Mr. Linh's and at the hotel the next night was how the shower is a shower head next to the sink so that when you take a shower, most of the bathroom gets wet a different approach. The hotel the second night was very nice. Breakfast was included. Just like at Mr. Linh's, you show up at a set time and they bring you the meal. Breakfast was one fried egg, a loaf of French bread and some pineapple with coffee instant coffee here or tea.
I noticed some comments in other reviews about people being concerned about driving techniques on this tour. Perhaps because we'd been in other parts of Viet Nam for two weeks, we were accustomed to it. We always felt safe, but they do have a different style of passing and cutting through traffic. Our driver was very good.

6-Day Off The Beaten Track Tour of North Vietnam from Hanoi | ene 2017

We had the two most amazing leaders....the tour guide and the skillful driver. Everyday was amazing beyond words. Our tour guide, Long, was knowledgeable, pleasing, courteous and simply the best. Our driver, his name was Long, too! He was simply so fabulous and he made us feel very safe. He was also very helpful in bringing our luggages in and out of the hotels and so on. We definitely recommend this trip for the travellers who have an open mind and open heart. The places we went were not very popular with tourists. That's the reason why it was so extraordinary.

3-Day Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall Tour from Hanoi | may 2016

The falls are magnificent but it is a long drive. Our guide spoke English well and engaged easily with us and was knowledgable about the area. He went out of his way to accomodate any needs or wants that we had along the way. We are still trying to come to grips with driving practices in Vietnam!

6-Day Off The Beaten Track Tour of North Vietnam from Hanoi | nov 2015

Aptly named - this tour takes you off the beaten track to experience the grass-roots Vietnam, staying in bamboo stilted homestays with thatched palm roofs, experiencing fresh home cooked food and seeing how the farming folk of North Vietnam live. You get a real sense of family and friendship! The stress of driving in a foreign country where you don't speak the language is taken away with the tour including a new Toyota air-conditioned SUV with driver and tour guide/interpreter. If like us you're not used to overly hot temperatures then I'd recommend going as we did in November. Temperatures ranged from mid-thirties around Hanoi to the high teens as we got in to the highlands near the China/Vietnam boarder. The tour guide is very knowledgeable and happily points out items of interest along the way. If you want to stop anywhere along the route they are more than happy to do so. The highlights for us were the cave trips and longboating - you'll certainly want to pack a camera for this trip! Not to mention marvelling at what can be carried on the humble motor-scooter - the most common form of transport on crowded streets and the small secondary roads you'll find yourself on. My advice is to have a small day pack when you leave the car and throw in a couple of water bottles when you do so as you'll work up a sweat and also for when you bed down for the night. The tour guide always ensured there was plenty of bottled water available for us. Also pack a small torch for the caves, some travel wipes, toilet tissues and hand sanitizer as bathrooms along the way are basic at best. Thankfully the homestays and hotels are chosen in advance to ensure you always have a decent hot shower and western-style toilet. Pack some flip-flops too.

You'll really have a great experience, enjoying the awesome scenery and come home with a great story to tell!
