Amazing Northern Lights Experience

Our experience with Thule tours was amazing! Omar was our entertaining tour guide. He was wonderful and gave us helpful hints on taking the best photos of the Northern Lights, which we did see! He also took photos of anyone who wanted them. Snacks were provided and hot cocoa.

Our tour guide was great. He never gave up on finding the Northern Lights. Along the way we even got to see where they dry cod. Once we found the lights we enjoyed hot chocolate, schnapps and pastries under the Northern Lights

The highlight of our trip to Iceland! We had an amazing time. It is difficult to explain how it felt to finally see the lights after a failed attempt the night before, and it isn't quite what you would expect! I highly recommend going to the Aurora exhibition in the town before going hunting for the lights, as it explains what to look for, but the naked eye doesn't see the lights the way a camera does! Omar was an amazing guide and tried so hard to find the lights for us. He was also a brilliant help with cameras and telling local stories etc. Overall, it was incredible, and when we return to Iceland we will definitely be in touch to book another tour. Thank you Omar!

Don'togo with Thule travel

We had only had 3 days in Reykjavik so did our weather research and the Friday seemed to be promising to see the lights. However when we arrived at the hotel the receptionist told us that Thule travel had phoned and cancelled ! and would be in touch about the following evening. We were very disappointed as the sky was clearing and it looked good. Saturday we were told it was going ahead, but even we could tell we weren't going to see anything. It was raining and completely clouded over however we went . The only thing we saw was the pollution over Reykjavik and the car headlights ! After standing in the cold looking at nothing we got back on the bus to wait for departure. We knew we weren't going to see anything. But what made it worse was the tour guide kept telling us 'quick another wave is coming !' 'Trying to get us off the bus. It would appear the only people who could see the northern lights was the tour guide and the professional photographer who took your photo with the lights imposed behind. I booked for the tour 2.5 - 3hrs total we ended up spending 5 hours out there in the dark and cold looking at nothing, 2 hrs of which on a bus with door open and no heating. Bottom line - they got us to go on this impossible to see anything night so they didn't have to refund us and was pathetic how the tour guide was obviously hell bent on trying to convince us there was something there. What made it worse was we met a couple on the Sunday who went with another company on the Friday and saw the northern lights . Don't waste you money with Thule travel. I am hoping they will be giving me a refund for taking us for fools.

Disappointed

First night got email to say cancel so emailed back to book next night no answer so had to phone them. Didnt see anything just parked up in one place thought we would of tried other places as advertised. Phoned next day but all trips cancelled such a shame as when on way home others had seen lights and they had not paid for tour. Think if there not going to confirm by email they should phone they have your number.

Okay - could have been a bit better

Now the issue with any Northern Lights tour is that your are somewhat victim to lady Fortune as to whether you will see the lights at all. We were very lucky and got to see them faintly. However, we didn’t drive that far away from Reykjavik really - possibly due to high winds that night - and only tried one location to see the lights which was near to a reasonably busy road (so headlights from passing cars made it quite bright). On the other hand though, other companies came to the same spot, so that must mean it is usually a good place to go. The guides were friendly and gave a handful of interesting anecdotes, there were blankets to keep us warm and they take a photo of you with the lights in the background (and will take a few until they have some good ones!). It would have been nice to drive a bit further out, or try a second venue - also I read about being given hot chocolate in another review but that didn’t happen. You do stop at a petrol station where you can buy one if you want. Personally if I were to try and see the lights again, I might hire a car rather than take a guided tour. However, this was a nice tour and we had a good (if chilly) time.

Tour Review

Even though the Northern Lights weren't strong on the night of our tour, the company still ensured that we had a good time. We were provided with hot chocolate and a treat while waiting for the lights to appear. We were also given a dropbox link to the pictures the guide took at no additional charge.

Some pros and cons! Could be great!

Omar was a great operator. We thought we might be late for the tour and he was so accommodating and made sure we could make it by collecting us last. Unfortunately it wasn't Omar who collected us. Whilst the lady was very nice, she knew very little about the NL phenomena and due to some mix up she failed to take us to the correct viewing point. We ended up watching the lights at the side of the road, but it was poorly chosen place to pull in as there were lights from a factory behind us and cloud cover obscured the view. We returned to bus and met with the other groups eventually. This was lovely - hot chocolate and schnapps provided! The photo was also taken here (although some people got more photos than others, we got one..). I messaged Omar to voice these concerns and he was very apologetic and offered a free NL trip. Unfortunately it was our last day there, but if we should return then I will definitely take Omar up on his offer!

Bus took us to bridge spanning tectonic plates where waited about an hour then the lights started to dance in the sky. Guide was very energetic and excited that we got to see some lights. The hot chocolate and cookies were a nice touch. Would go back again.
