The Basics

Known as Grey Street by locals, the Indian Quarter draws in locals and tourists looking to shop in the authentic Indian markets, enjoy Bunny Chow (curry in a bread bowl), and visit the Juma Mosque. You can explore the area on your own or book a sightseeing tour of Durban that includes the highlights of the Indian Quarter. Traveling with a guide ensures you don’t get lost in the hectic streets and narrow alleys.

Visiting the Juma Mosque Spanning multiple blocks of the Indian Quarter, the Juma Mosque is the area’s main attraction and one of the largest mosques in the Southern Hemisphere. You can admire the domes and spires from the outside, or visit on weekdays from 9am–4pm or Saturday from 9am–1pm to explore the interior. On Fridays, you can expect the mosque to be packed with local worshipers—it accommodates up to 6,000 people. To learn more about the mosque, visit on a guided tour.
