We were picked up nice and promptly and transferred to the boat launch area where we did have to wait a while until other guests arrived. We then boarded the boat for the 1.5 hour cruise up the Saigon River, during which a light breakfast was provided. The trip up the river was enjoyable but the boat itself is quite loud and our boat guide did not talk to us at all during the trip which was a bit disappointing. Once we arrived at the main entrance to the Cu Chi Tunnels we were transferred to our bike guide Tinh from Grasshopper Adventures. The bikes and helmets provided were of excellent quality and were fitted to each of us. Tinh also took the time to ask what our biking experience was and talk through the terrain we would be covering during the ride before setting off. The ride itself although long is very easy and enjoyable - mainly along back and dirt roads. Tinh was excellent, stopping along the way to explain the sights and allow us to take photos. Part-way through the morning we reunited with our support driver at a local cafe for some cold drinks, fresh fruit and a toilet stop. Lunch at a local restaurant at the end of the ride was also very enjoyable. The tunnels themselves were very interesting and it was nice going to a quieter entrance so you didn't feel like part of the swarm! Tinh's knowledge of history was very good and we appreciated how he has taken the time to go and study the points of view from both sides to present as much unbiased fact as possible. On the drive back to Saigon Tinh was also kind enough to write up a list of things to see, do, eat - not only in Saigon but in all the other places we were intending to visit throughout our trip.
The boat ride up was informative and fun. Duke the river guide was the best tour guide and English speaking Vietnamese person we found all holiday. He was funny and tried to keep a 1.5 hour ride up to the tunnels a light hearted affair. He handed our small family group over to Phat who took a little while to warm up but his knowledge and talk at the Tunnels was first class. I would question the idea of a 26km bike tour before the tunnels as the last 10kms done after a rest stop were only more of the same plantations and canals and back roads.Novelty had well and truly worn off by then as had a lot of the skin on my butt! Whilst the bikes were first class and performed faultlessly the last 10 kms were not necessary and 26 kms is a LONG way!
This tour was exactly what we wanted. The minibus arrived promptly and we were transported to the river to start the journey by boat to Cui Chi. When we arrived we were met by our bike guide, Sam from Grasshopper Adventures. Sam was a great guide, taking us through the countryside for a 3 hour bike journey, explaining what we were passing and what to notice along the journey. We had a break along route where the driver met up with us and we enjoyed some wonderful fresh fruit and cold drinks before continuing on to the Cui Chi tunnels. The section of tunnels we toured were further from HCMC and therefore less crowded. Both Sam and the local guide were very knowledgeable and made the experience one we won't forget. At the end we were transported back by minibus to our hotel. All in all a terrific experience and great day out. Well organized tour and great value for money.
Great tour. Guide was knowledgeable and kept things interesting. I would highly recommend this tour for people interested in a long bike ride through more undiscovered parts of Vietnam as well as a less touristy experience at the Cu Chi Tunnels.
