An Important and Sobering Experience
, jul 2019
Our guide Achim was excellent in providing knowledgeable, in-depth commentary during our time together. While it is difficult to absorb and witness the level of atrocity, it is important to confront, and more so to pay respects to those who suffered and lost their lives here.
A Memorable Experience

We weren't sure what to expect from this tour. I was expecting to be an unconsolable mess the entire time, but then we met Gordon, our tour guide. He opened the tour by stating "This is first and foremost a cemetery. Second, it is a memorial", and we felt immediately relieved. He informed us that the Dachau Memorial has been structured primarily by survivors of the camp, and that shows. There was a strong focus on the events leading up to the Holocaust, which felt relevant in regards to preventing a future similar event. The memorial was not designed for shock value, thankfully. It is a calm, respectful, even peaceful place that pays remarkable tribute to the victims. There were parts of the tour that made it impossible not to break down, mainly because the preceding exhibits had humanized the victims so much that we were overcome with empathy for them, and then despair at seeing what was done to them. Gordon was beyond impressive. He guided us through the day with an excellent eye. Whether we needed information, silence, space, or even an occasional joke to break the tension, he provided unhesitatingly. Upon returning to Munich, he offered to help us find the restaurant we wanted to go to, and even offered to help us purchase the subway tickets we needed to help us get around the city the for next few days. "Above and beyond" would be an understatement. My group of four is unanimous that this was the most sincere, intense guided tour we have ever experienced. Thank you Gordon, and thank you to all the survivors who helped make this site a beautiful memorial to the many victims who perished there.
Excellent Tour

Our tour guide was great, and we really enjoyed his insight and wisdom during this tour. The tour is somber, and a very emotional experience, but I learned so much from this guide!
Must do...

Everyone who visits Munich should include this tour in their itinerary. A very important part of history. Couple it with a walking tour of the Third Reich. Brendan our tour guide was awesome. So knowledgeable and did a terrific job and setting the tone.
Awesome Tour!

Our tour guide was Gordon & he was fabulous! He was on time & met us at our hotel. We walked to the train station & boarded for a short trip. In the town of Dachau, we took a short bus ride. We are WW2 enthusiasts & asked Gordon many questions. He was very knowledgeable about the camp, WW2 and had also talked with survivors. Our tour went over the allotted time but we were all ok with it since it was so interesting!

Great private tour with Mathew - learned a lot, very pleasant guide, allowed us opportunity to modify the tour as we went, but also kept us on time.
Sobering but worth visiting

Our guide, Scott, was well-informed and extremely helpful. It is hard to describe this tour in words. We have all seen pictures from history books, but seeing it firsthand brings vivid clarity to the tragic experience of the prisoners. Good for teens to learn about the atrocities that were committed during this time period, but not recommended for smaller children.
Excellent experience
