Situé au sud-est d'Abu Dhabi au milieu du désert tentaculaire, Masdar City apparaît comme un mirage. La ville a débuté en 2008 dans le but de créer l'éco-ville la plus durable au monde. Pendant les mois chauds d'été, les températures dans les rues de Masdar City sont jusqu'à 60 degrés Fahrenheit (20 degrés Fahrenheit) plus fraîches qu'au centre-ville d'Abou Dhabi, grâce à une tour éolienne géante canalisant une brise rafraîchissante dans les rues de la ville.
Les panneaux solaires sur les toits - constituant l'un des plus grands systèmes du Moyen-Orient - exploitent les puissants rayons du soleil pour créer une énergie propre pour alimenter la ville. Alors que seuls quelques milliers de personnes y vivent et y travaillent actuellement, le projet devrait à terme abriter 40 000 personnes, et 50 000 autres se déplaceront pour travailler et étudier.
La ville est ouverte tous les jours et peut être explorée en quelques heures. Une fois que les visiteurs arrivent dans le parking, un véhicule sans conducteur les emmène à travers la ville dans le cadre du système de transport en commun rapide personnel de Masdar. La ville abrite actuellement une douzaine de restaurants, dont un restaurant mexicain, un café et un restaurant de sushis, avec de plus en plus de mouvement en tout temps.
Masdar City broke ground in 2008 and is still being constructed. The core of the city is in place, anchored by the Middle East headquarters of Siemens and the Masdar Institute neighborhood. A 148-foot (45-meter) wind tower helps channel cooling breezes down to the shaded streets below. Visitors can enjoy the outdoors at Masdar Park, ride on the world’s first on-demand driverless vehicle, explore the master plan and models of Masdar City, admire the innovative design and architecture of the city, or learn more about innovation at the Siemens Ingenuity for Life Center. Refuel with a coffee or food at one of several restaurants and coffee shops in the city.
Masdar City is included in a number of guided sightseeing tours of the region, from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Explore the city, along with other area highlights such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre.
Masdar City is located around 10 miles (17 kilometers) southeast of Abu Dhabi. Visitors can drive to the city and park their car in one of the outlying parking lots. From there, a driverless personal rapid transit (PRT) vehicle will take you into the city center.
The city is open for visits at all times, though the PRT, Siemens Center for Ingenuity, and certain other businesses are only open during business hours from Sundays to Thursdays. Expect to spend between 60 and 90 minutes exploring Masdar City. Allocate more time if you plan to eat at any of the restaurants.
Masdar City is located right next to Khalifa City, making it easy to access popular attractions such as the Al Raha Mall, the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, and the Al Forsan International Sports Resort. Masdar City is also located near Yas Island, an entertainment destination with several theme parks, a mall, beach, and a Formula 1 race track.
