A fun tour with some great stories by an amazing storyteller. Would recommend!
So much fun! Our guide Donavon was engaging, animated and what a memory! So much to memorize!
This is a great tour! I signed up for it because I had done the Haunted Mountain tour a few years ago and was impressed with Mr. King's depth and breadth of knowledge on the subject and his way of imparting the info. This tour was equally informative and entertaining and I enjoyed every minute of it. Mr. King knows his stuff and knows how to pace a tour so that the walking and the talking somehow blend together into a great experience for everyone involved. I would do it again in a heartbeat! I look forward to other tours given by Donovan King in the future.
we were given the wrong meeting place tour started 1/2 hour late he was in a rush walked way to fast I and grandson dropped out in two blocks could not keep up would not recommend this tour
I have mixed feelings about this tour but to be fair, it's because I had VERY different expectations! Here's a brief summary of my experience:
First off, Donovan my tour guide is a great storyteller. He goes into character once the tour begins and stays this way like an improv actor does when you ask him any questions. But, largely, the tour is a storytelling walk of sorts.
Upon reading the description of the tour, I believed we were going to actually see the cemetery on Mount Royalthe largest cemetery in all of Montreal. However, you don't see it at all, not even the gate/entrance unless I somehow missed this.... Because the cemeteryand vistas of the city from herewas the biggest draw for me, this tour was a disappointment in my book. You're also not going to get close to the abandoned hospital, but you'll see it at a distance. I don't recall any abandoned castles, as mentioned in the description, but I think it's referring to a castle remnant/old wall that you see at the McTavish monument.
Depending on the time of year you're going on the Haunted Mountain tour, it can get very, very darkpitch-black even. So be sure to bring a flashlight or follow a buddy with his/her light. If you have an iPhone, the flashlight app can come in very handy that's what I did to avoid carrying any extra gear.
There are some steps and hills to climb, and doing this in the dark might be difficult for some with limited mobility. Look out for tree roots sometimes jutting out into the walking paths, for instance! A couple of the path sections also had quite some dirt and rocks, so I'd recommend sneakers or hiking boots with some amount of traction.
In conclusion, this really is about listening to stories about the people who may haunt the mountain, and not really sightseeing. But Donovan's storytelling does make up for things. I'm sure his tours in the other locations Old Montreal, for instance are much better as you can actually SEE things other than trees!
