Srirangapatna
Srirangapatna est une île au milieu de la rivière sacrée Cauvery. C'est un lieu d'une grande importance historique, culturelle et religieuse. C'était autrefois une capitale du royaume de Mysore pendant le règne de Tipu Sultan et le site de nombreux bâtiments historiques importants.
Autrefois ville fortifiée, les vestiges du fort de Tipu sont encore visibles aujourd'hui. Le fort est un complexe abritant plusieurs monuments et bâtiments importants. C'est à partir de là que Tipu Sultan a lancé un assaut contre les Britanniques et un obélisque marque l'endroit où il est mort au combat. Près de l'une des portes du fort se trouve la Jama Masjid, la mosquée construite par Tipu Sultan en 1787 lorsqu'il est monté sur le trône de Mysore.
Juste à l'extérieur du fort entouré de jardins luxuriants, le Gumbaz a été construit par Tipu Sultan au 18ème siècle comme un mausolée où son père Hyder Ali, l'ancien sultan et souverain, et sa mère Fatima Begum ont été inhumés, puis Tipu Sultan lui-même. Une autre attraction populaire est Daria Daulat Bagh, le palais d'été de Tipu Sultan.
Le majestueux temple Sri Ranganathaswamy domine la ville et est un important centre de pèlerinage pour les Vaishnavites, adorateurs hindous du seigneur Vishnu. Cet important temple a été construit au 9ème siècle et est dédié au seigneur Vishnu sous sa forme de Ranganatha, Vishnu couché sur le serpent.
The basics
The town’s popular attraction in town is Tipu's Summer Palace, erected in 1784 in honor of Tipu's victory over the British. Its main draw is its intricate Indo-Saracenic architecture and beautiful interiors. The old fort is also a highlight, as is the Jama Masjid mosque and the tombs of Tipu and his parents. Most visitors to Srirangapatna come as part of a guided tour from Mysore or Bangalore.

- Photography is not allowed inside the summer palace.
- Remember to wear comfortable shoes as getting around the sights here requires a good deal of walking.
How to get there
Srirangapatna is located 80 miles (129 kilometers) southwest of Bangalore and 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of Mysore, on the Bangalore-Mysore road. There's a small railway station right in the town and a slightly larger one in the adjacent town of Palahalli, a 10-minute drive away, but it’s generally easier to visit as part of a guided tour or with a private taxi.

When to get there
Attractions at Srirangapatna are open daily, but it’s a good idea to arrive earlier in the day, when crowds are fewest. If you’re visiting during the rainy monsoon season (roughly June through September), set out extra early, as there will be more traffic.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple
While many visitors come to see Tipu sites, it’s worth sticking around to visit the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. This beautiful, Dravidian-style temple dominates the town and is an important pilgrimage center for Vaishnavites, Hindu worshipers of Lord Vishnu. This important temple was built during the 9th century and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Ranganatha, depicted reclining on a serpent.
