Le musée alpin de Chamonix est installé dans un ancien palais datant du début du XXe siècle et met en lumière le développement du tourisme de la ville, du moment où les visiteurs se sont rendus pour la première fois à Chamonix pour admirer les glaciers jusqu'à la construction des téléphériques. A significant collection of prints illustrates the dramatic changes to the Chamonix valley through the years and exhibits, photographs, and artifacts tell the stories of famous mountain climbing feats. The museum is often included in walking tours of Chamonix and is a great rainy day activity.
The museum is located in the heart of Chamonix’s main city center, within walking distance of both the train station and the Place du Mont Blanc bus stop. Parking in the center of Chamonix can be difficult, so if arriving by car, leave your car at one of the car parks outside the city limits and plan to arrive by foot.
The Alpine Museum is open year-round between 10am and 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm. The museum is open daily from June through January, but is closed on Tuesdays from early February through early May. The museum is rarely crowded but may be a bit busier on rainy days.
Many visitors combine a visit to the Alpine Museum with a visit to the Espace Tairraz and Crystal Museum since admission to one allows free access to the other. The Espace Tairraz features an innovative mountaineering simulator where you can climb famous peaks without the risk, and the Crystal Museum, which showcases a collection of minerals and crystals collected in the local mountains including smoked quartz and pink luminescent fluorspar.
