The basics
Despite its close proximity to Rovaniemi, the Suomu Ski Resort—set atop the 1,345-foot-high (410-meter-high) Suomutunturi fell in Kemijärvi—is among one of the least developed and less crowded ski resorts in Finland. Its tranquil surroundings and laid-back atmosphere, however, have been renowned among locals since it opened in 1965. Located on the shores of Lake Kemijärvi right on the Arctic Circle, Suomu is surrounded by dense pine forests, rolling fells, cozy log cabins, and reindeer farms—an ideal destination for both winter and summer outdoor activities. Suomu is also just east of Rovaniemi, within striking distance of the city’s famed Santa Claus Village and Arktikum museum.

- A day trip to Suomu is ideal for skiers and outdoor sports enthusiasts visiting Rovaniemi.
- The resort area includes 10 slopes including black, red, and blue runs; a children’s slope; four lifts; cross country skiing trails; and a sun terrace.
- There are ski and snowboard rentals and a ski school at the resort.
- There are no facilities for visitors with limited mobility.
- Temperatures stay below freezing in Lapland for most of the winter, so choose warm clothing and footwear.
How to get there
The Suomu Ski Resort (Suomutunturi) is located about 80 miles (127 km) east of Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland. The resort town is best reached by car, though there is a bus line that connects from Rovaniemi.

In addition to Suomu, two of the most popular ski resorts in Lapland are Levi and Ylläs, located north of Rovaniemi in the fells of northern Lapland.
