Things to Know Before You Go
- This secluded park is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts who want to get off the beaten path—no more waiting in traffic to spot a lion at Africa’s over-crowded game parks.
- A variety of lodging and tour options are available to suit any budget.
- You can get discounted rates if you visit during the wet season (November–April), but only some parts of the park are accessible at this time.
How to Get There
Kafue National Park can be reached from the tourism hub of Livingstone or the capital city of Lusaka. Due to unpredictable road conditions, it is easiest to access the park by plane (there are multiple landing strips within the park) or on a tour that includes round-trip transportation.
When to Get There
The dry season—from June through October—is the best time to visit the park. Dry weather enables you to access more of the park and wildlife is typically easiest to spot during this time. During the rainy months, much of the park is inaccessible. However, you can still access some lodges that are open year-round and accessible by plane.
Top Wildlife Viewing in Zambia While Kafue National Park offers some of the most secluded wildlife viewing opportunities in Zambia, each of the country’s numerous parks offer safari-goers different perks. South Luangwa National Park is known for its walking safaris and big game sightings. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park boasts Victoria Falls and is one of the country’s few parks where you can spot rhinos. Head to Liuwa Plain National Park in November to see its famous wildebeest migration.
