Great pick up service at 0ur hotel. Guide was great and the organization at Hobbiton was amazing. The tour was a bit too quick though and everyone was always trying to catch up the Hobbiton guide.Still, glad we went--it was adorble.
The Hobbiton movie set tour was outstanding, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating and the site is unbelievable. The only disappointment is no interior hobbit hole sets to see but overall a great experience. Highly recommended.
Kudos to Cheeky Kiwi Travel and our tour operator Kreig. We booked through Viator and were traveling to Hobbiton. First of all, the tour group was just the right size. Kreig was personable and informative and passionate about New Zealand. He is from Australia, but I think he secretly wants to be a Kiwi. He had good information for us. He kept our attention. Cheeky Kiwi Travel is the way to go. We had plenty of restroom stops. We even stopped to take pictures of the country side. Kreig showed us a mountain range where part of Lord of the Rings was shot and gave us a fun fact about it. Kreig had a little bit of wizardry up his sleeve as well and did everything he could to give the tour added value. My only complaint is the way that the operators of Hobbiton rush you through everything. I wanted to wait around and soak it all in. It was such a magical place, but we were a bit rushed through everything. And considering the cost to get there and admission, I really wish we could have spent more time there. But that wasn't the fault of Kreig or Cheeky Kiwi. Kreig is an all around nice guy. He is informative and knowledgeable. I will use Cheeky Kiwi on further travels to New Zealand.
Our driver, Pat, was the best. He took great care of us, stopping as needed which put us a bit off schedule but he made it work. We also had a guy in the group who was so into it, he dressed as a hobbit down to his bare feet! The site is beautiful, the Green Dragon Inn and Mill area excellent. Expected rain didnt hit, so several bonuses on this trip!
We booked a small group early morning departure through Viator. The challenge was getting up for the 6am departure but it was worth it. The tour was with Cheeky Kiwiand they showed up on time and in a small van where we met the other couple heading out with us.Our driver Richard drove along roads less travelled, allowing us the opportunity stop a couple of times to stretch and view the countryside. This is a drive of a little over two hours and was fascinating. We even drove through a a town with numerous painted cow statues (which we stopped at on the way back for a photo op.) There are lots of cattle and sheep along the route and this is where Hobbiton is located on a large cattle farm owned by the Alexander family. Once you arrive at Hobbiton you are in the hands of professionals and the tour progresses like clockwork. We got aboard a Green Hobbiton coach, along with about twenty or so others, and we were off as our guide explained the genesis of this tourist attraction. The guide also was here to ensure we moved along so that we did not hold up the other buses that would follow. This is why you want to be the first tour out because there are no people to get in the way of your photos and there is plenty of time to snap photos of the colourful doors. An interesting fact is a significant number of the people in our group, and in every group, have never seen LOTR, yet they are here. And there are lots of people arriving and climbing on the buses very twenty minutes. Here we are off season and dozens of people were here for the tour yet it never seemed overcrowded. It is well worth the time spent.
1. Our tour guide was Awesome! At the end of the tour he passed out New Zealand keychains and Whittaker's chocolates to all of us on the bus.
2. The tour was AMAZING. It was a beautiful and sunny day so my pictures came out perfect!
3. The small van was VERY spacious. We had charging outlets in each row of seating.
4. My tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly, funny as heck and we watched The Hobbit on the way there!
