Another great tour. I think if you cannot do the transit tour and are just in Panana for couple of days this tour is great!!! You get to see Miraflores locks and Edwing times it so we are there early enough to get great view spot and see both canals being used!! Got to see a movie about the canal and Panama. Then we had great lunch at Amador Causeway at Sirena. Got chance to take panoramic photos of Panama City. Learned A LOT of history of Panama from Edwing. Then he took us in a tour of Casco Viejo (Both by foot and van because it was really hot day). Overall, great experience!
Seeing the Mirafores locks on the Panama Canal, but our guide refused to speak up so the customers sitting the back of the van could hear. We asked several times to speak up and it got to a point that the people who heard relayed the information back. His walk through the old city offered little information and actually turned out to be quite boring. Not impressed at all.
Thoroughly enjoyable tour with Gonzo, a thoroughly knowledgeable and kick-back guide that interacted well with our small group. Limiting the number of participants (maximum 9 but even better with just our 5, as it promotes less of a cattle call and more of a private feeling) was important to me, because I rarely do guided tours and never do one with a huge throng of people that make you feel like you're being herded around.Started and ended in the old town with just the perfect amount of walking, so a few historical sites were visited but not so many as to get bored. On to the locks of the canal where Gonzo wisely opted not to herd us around inside the visitor center, but instead just let each person ramble on their own. A quick drive over and back on the Bridge of Americas just for the view and to spend enough time in the air conditioned van to cool off again, and onto a comfortable spot for an alfresco lunch on a small island with a wonderful view of the city's skyline. Finally a stop at a nature preserve on Punta Culebra that was very laid back and more enjoyable than I would have thought, partially because Gonzo should his passion and interest in many of Panama's natural species and the concern to keep the human element from encroaching on them. In all, a relaxed and enjoyable introduction to some of the highlights in Panama. My constructive criticism: 1) MENTION the name of the tour company- Barefoot Panama Tours. Gonzo approaching in thongs, T shirt and a chill attitude was the kind of tour I was looking for! 2) I'm not an early riser, either on vacation or in real time. Getting to the meeting point at 8am was doable, but I would have added the 5th star for a 9AM start! But as titled, this tour checked all the boxes!
My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. We stopped over in Panama on our way home from Peru to experience the Panama Canal. Unfortunately, on the day of our tour booking no ships passed through the locks during our visit. However, when we were informed by the canal authority that several unscheduled ships were making their way to the locks and would be arriving within the next half hour/fourty-five minutes, our group asked to stay to see their passing. Our guide Gonzo was very flexible and rearranged our itinerary to accommodate our requests. Everyone enjoyed seeing the ships pass through and we did not miss any other planned stop on our excursion. In addition, the city tour was fascinating, experiencing a Panamanian lunch delicious, and all was enhanced by Gonzo's charm, humor, historical perspective and narrative, and flexibility.
Ross was THE best! I'd made the reservation for the wrong day, and he managed to get us on the tour anyway. He was knowledgeable, funny, and patient. He knows everything in Casco Viejo and at the locks like the back of his hand, with the ability to answer a TON of the curveball questions we threw him. He was also extremely honest about the current political and social situation in Panama. He was patient and kept a watchful eye on us all, and even left us with one of our trip catchphrases Well played. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour - definitely a highlight of the trip. Tip: if you meet at Cafe Unido, get there early to sample the empanadas get the spicy jelly and the ridiculously delicious green tea!
Had Ross as a guide. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and is a good ambassador for the area. Watching the locks at work was very interesting and a good learning experience. Loved the outdoor reserve and got some great views of sloths. Had a delicious meal in a local place so got to try out local food. Tour of old town was full of history, stories and certainly left one with a sense of the development of the country and how it faced various challenges. Excellent tour for giving an overview of what you need to know to explore further if you choose.
