What a fab time my husband and I had riding these awesome horses. The whole experience was really well organised, they had all the warm clothing and hats and catered for all types of riders beginner to experienced. Finished the ride off with a talk and hot chocolate
Awesome experience. And I must say that all the people who works are fantastic! I was so nervous for me and for my 8 year old son at first but they made sure to keep us all feel safe. And so our family had a wonderful time. Thank you for assisting and taking care of my son.
I highly recommend all riders to try this experience. Icelandic horses have an unique gait that is very cool. I picked the package with the pick up and drop off and it was very easy and convenient. They also provide coveralls and rainboots for you to use. I was very thankful for the coveralls.
At first I thought this would be boring. Instead this was my favorite part of my trip. Riding on my horse Gangster was fun. The horse was gentle and the ride was great. The guides were very nice and generous especially to someone who had never ridden on a horse before. I would definitely recommend this activity to anyone
They offer warm overalls, boots and a helmet-bring gloves though and warm socks! The guides are so friendly and they break you off into a beginner and more advanced group. Very serene. If you like horses and want a mellow adventure-this is it. And they really seem to treat the horses well:)
Riding these horses was so fun! We actually did this tour on the day we arrived. So if there's a day you only want to do a quick 4-hour tour, this is the one to do. Upon being driven to the stables, we were given over-garments that fit over even the coats we were wearing, shoes, and helmets to wear. Which was great because otherwise your regular clothes and shoes would get really dirty! The horses are very gentle and easy to ride. Halfway through, the horses get a break to eat and you're given information about the area, about the horses, etc. Then we were given an option to go with the fast group or slow group. We went with the fast group, just because we wanted to experience a little more thrill. These horses are so gentle and obedient that we had no hesitation. This was our second time riding horses, so we are definitely beginners. Riding the horses at a faster pace was so fun! It's in short spurts, so the horses walk for several minutes, then you take them faster, then walk, faster....several times. Since this was our first time riding horses at a faster pace, the short spurts were perfect for us. These horses naturally just fall into a line and kind of go with the flow, so that made it very relaxing as a beginner rider. Two guides went with us and then they split to lead the fast or slow group, so if there was a problem with a horse or someone had questions, there was someone to help them out immediately. Such sweet animals! We loved it.
If you have the chance to ride with Ishestar Stables, run, don't walk, to do so. Actually, they have a van to pick you up, so you don't even have to run.
Everything about the experience is first rate. Examples:
1. The stables: extremely well-run and organized. When you arrive, you're shown a helpful instruction and safety video, given access to any kind of clothing you'd like to borrow to make your ride more comfortable, and then divided into groups based on your riding experience and preferences.
2. The horses: taken care of as well as you'd treat your kids. Ishestar ensures that their 180 horses are rotated, given plenty of vacation time and not overworked. They treat their horses like valued members of their family, and it shows in the attitudes of the horses themselvesmellow, well-behaved and eager to give you the ride of a lifetime.
I was paired with Dreki means Dragon in Icelandic, but despite the ominous-sounding name, he was a dream mount: smooth as silk to ride, responsive to my commands, and charmingly sneaky he started at the back of our four-rider group, but every few minutes would work his way up in line, so by the end of our tour, he was right behind the guide/lead horse.
3. The guides: knowledgable, amiable and professionaland totally dedicated to a safe ride for you and your horse. I was lucky enough to be paired with Snorfridur aka Snaja. She was infinitely patient with all of my questions and geared the ride perfectly to our ability I was in the advanced/fast group with plenty of cantering and tolting, plus a nice photo op with the horses when we stopped to let them rest and graze for a few minutes.
4. The ride: through the largest lava field in Iceland, complete with a volcano safely dormant! in the background. There was plenty of greenery around as well, but the lava field was especially memorable, looking like the moon. Evidently, NASA must've agreed, since they trained our astronauts here for the lunar-landing missions.
I've ridden all over the world on vacations, but had always wanted to experience a ride on an Icelandic horse yes, they're horses, not ponies!. Now I've had my wish grantedby the best stables I could have imagined. No matter your level of ridingfrom never been on a horse, to riding regularlydo yourself a favor and pick Ishestar when you visit Iceland.
