We went out not expecting to see much. However the crew did everything they could to get everyone a chance to see a whale and we all did. They communicated well and even offered free sea sickness pills. They were on time and communicated well. I would recommend this adventure.
We based our decision to use Elgin based upon TripAdvisor reviews and ecological focus of the company. Even though it was a chilly 45 degrees Fahrenheit in July and we all downed insulated full storm suits, we stayed on the top deck for the whole journey. It was amazing. We saw two individual Humpbacks and likely several Minkes as well as dozens of puffins, lesser gulls, and even an artic skirt
I was looking forward to seeing marine life I have not seen before. Apparently there was a whale, but I found only one passenger who saw it. It seems it was seen and move on, we have fulfilled the sighting. Once one was spotted there was no great desire to see another one for the majority who didn't see it. We spent loads of time watching Dolphins. There is an interesting area when you get off the boat to learn about the marine life around Iceland. Perhaps I was expecting too much!
Unfortunately this tour was cancelled due to bad weather on the day. We had scheduled something for every day so we couldn't rearrange another time. All the tour operators were so helpful flexible and friendly. We had no problem being reinbursed.
Even though we didn't go an giving 5stars as they were so helpful
The logistical arrangements, the guides, staff, boats, buses and facilities were all excellent. Unfortunately though we didn't get to see any whales which was a shame. However, because of this we were given a voucher to book on a trip again in the next two years if we were to visit Iceland again which is a nice touch.
Whale watching might be great in summer but it is not definitely a winter activity. It was super cold and we did not see any whales. We did see some dolphins and the crew really tried hard to make it interesting but don't think it is worth the trouble in winter, unless you somehow end up being the lucky one.
