Unfortunately due to a plane arriving late we missed the walking tour but we're able to catch the gondola ride. We enjoyed that. We were offered the chance to do the walking tour the next day but had to fly out.
too large a group. venice was so crowded even tho it was the shoulder season which isn't the tour groups fault but they oversell this for people trying walk shoulder to shoulder, getting separated from crowd and not being able to enjoy at all. we ultimately bailed and didn't even get our gondola ride. My advice is to find guarantee small group size tour if you do one.
3.00 pm tour. Gondola ride for the first half hour, 3 of us shared with another family of 3 - very relaxing and as expected. We had to wait for about 10 minutes or so for others to join us when we left the gondola, and then walk to the next meeting point where we met others for the walking part of the tour. It all took too long, and was quite disorganised. Too many people in the group. The guide was lacking any enthusiasm and not very interesting to listen to. Saw the Rialto Bridge from a distance on the tour, before we were due to head back to the starting point, so we left the tour at that point to go it alone .... and we were happy to do so.
We really enjoyed this tour because our tour guide was a Venice resident who grew up on in Venice and was raising 2 teenage kids in Venice. She gave us a really good sense of what it's like to grow up and live in the city. We learned things like the kids all have to learn to swim very young, that they learn to row but prefer motor boats and that the houses are always full of water.
As I'd had time to more or less get lost in Venice the previous day, I found the walking tour to be relatively uninteresting as I'd seen many of the sites on my own. The guide did however offer some interesting insights into the history and culture of the city. The gondola ride was pleasant.
For this tour we had a lady who was a resident of Venice and whose family had lived there for generations. She was very passionate about her city and went the extra mile to be informative. It was a very interesting walk and we learnt lots about the history of the city. The gondola ride which followed was very enjoyable. We had already had one which included a serenade but this one followed a different and more interesting route.
