Generally, I really enjoyed visiting Chichen Itza before the sun went down, then again after dark to see the light show. The site was less crowded late in the day, and the ruins illuminated at night were beautiful. However, I wasn't totally happy with the tour company, Amigos Tours. The tour was advertised as having a noon pick up, but we were told the night before that we wouldn't be picked up until almost 3:00 pm. The meal that was included wound up being too late to be lunch, but too early for dinner, so everyone on our bus had eaten already, not sure what to expect when the pick up time was moved back. Stopping for this meal was a waste of our time and money. The tour guide was very sweet and knowledgeable, but we could hardly hear her presentation on the way to Chichen Itza because she had no microphone on the noisy van. The tour was supposed to be bilingual, but she seemed to talk a lot more in Spanish than English. If you can find any other tour option for visiting Chichen Itza during the day and night, I suggest you take it.
This tour would be a great experience if it were done by a different tour company. We had the ride from hell and back 2 hours each way. We were supposed to have the English language tour but neither the driver or the guide we met in Chichen Itza spoke English I think we were lumped with a Spanish speaking tour group. The van that picked us up was full one person had to sit in the middle between the driver and the passenger seat, the A/C didn't work and the back windows didn't open, so it was a ride from hell and back. The guide took the Spanish speaking group with her and left us with the driver which was a nice and polite young man but didn't speak a word of English. After reading the reviews in the Amigos Tours facebook page and on tripadvisor I'm surprised Viator keeps on doing business with them.
Very nice tour, but we run into some issues, due to March 10 being the private event for all the government officials and foreign embassy representatives attending. Took some time to clear us, but at the end everything turnout to be great.
My wife and I have seen the pyramids and light show at Giza, Egypt and this comoares very favorably. The tour and show are great and the light show was still free! Tour until 4 pm then have dinner and return at 7 for ithe show and walk right in.
