Belfry Hill (Cerro Campanario)

Nahuel Huapi National Park, Bariloche, Argentina

The basics

You can either take the chairlift to the summit of the hill or follow a well-marked path that leads to the top—though the trail is only one mile (1.6 kilometers), there’s an elevation gain of 280 meters (918 feet). Belfry Hill (Cerro Campanario) is featured on several Bariloche sightseeing tours, which typically transport you partway up the hill in a vehicle in order to save time and energy. Half- or full-day excursions tend to also cover the mountain-surrounded Nahuel Huapi Lake; the Alpine-style San Eduardo Chapel; and Clover Lagoon (Laguna El Trebol).

Things to know before you go

  • At the top of the hill, a cafe serves cakes and coffees, and offers panoramic views from floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • The trail leading to the summit is uneven at times so ensure that you’re wearing sturdy shoes and take a jacket to brace yourself against the wind at the top of the mountain.
  • Neither the chairlift nor the trail are wheelchair-accessible.
