The basics
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is one of several World War II sites in the Kanchanaburi region and often features on day trips and multi-day tours to the area. Those with a particular interest in Thailand’s war history can opt for an excursion focused on the railway and other significant war sites, including the bridge on the River Kwai and the JEATH War Museum. Some tours also include a ride on the infamous “Death Railway” or a visit to Hellfire Pass, a section of track that has since been converted into a walking path.
Things to know before you go
*Admission to the cemetery is free. *Be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat as the cemetery is not well-shaded. *The cemetery is accessible to wheelchairs via a service entrance near the main office.
How to get there
Kanchanaburi is easily accessed by rail and bus from Bangkok, and the war cemetery is located about a 5-minute walk from the city's main station. The central Bangkok railway station has trips to the Burma Railway and stops to let visitors view the cemetery.
When to get there
While the cemetery grounds are always open, it’s best to visit during regular business hours when the gardeners are on-site and can assist with locating grave markers. Plan to visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and humidity.
