Nessuno sa bene come abbia preso il nome il ponte di Cromwell a Kenmare, ma probabilmente non prende il nome da Oliver Cromwell. Una teoria popolare sul ponte di pietra è che fosse chiamato "croimeal", la parola gaelica per "baffi", ma quando gli anglofoni hanno sentito per caso la gente del posto parlare del ponte, hanno pensato che stessero dicendo "Cromwell".

Comunque abbia preso il nome, il Cromwell's Bridge è uno dei tanti siti belli e antichi lungo il pittoresco Ring of Kerry. Si trova appena fuori dal villaggio di Kenmare, vicino al cerchio di pietre, rendendolo una comoda tappa per i visitatori che passano per l'area.

With greenery surrounding it and a river rushing underneath, Cromwell’s Bridge makes for a charming picnic or photo stop for travelers to Kenmare. Many half-day and full-day tours of the Ring of Kerry start from or make a stop at Kenmare, allowing travelers to view Cromwell Bridge and the Stone Circle, as well as other key sights along the scenic driving route, such as Valentia Island and Ballycarbery Castle.

It’s best to visit during daylight so you can properly admire the bridge and the surrounding plants and trees. Summer days in Ireland are long, which means you can enjoy early mornings and late evenings here without any crowds.

What Else to See in Kenmare

While you are in Kenmare, save time to check out a few other attractions in the area. Stroll down Main Street and Henry Street, both of which are lined with colorfully painted buildings hosting shops, pubs, cafés, and other small businesses. Also worth a visit is the Stone Circle, a kind of mini Stonehenge made from 15 boulders hauled into place during the Bronze Age. The Stone Circle is mere minutes from Cromwell’s Bridge.
