The Virginia & Truckee Railroad allows travelers to experience the frontier days, taking them back to the golden era of the West, when railroads were supreme and ’49ers populated the hills looking for gold. This steam-powered railway revives the bygone days when Carson City and the mining towns of Nevada were some of the richest on earth—filled with overnight millionaires. See the mines in person, learn about the flats and mountains, and hear stories of great wealth, boom and bust. Rides are often taken on tours out of Lake Tahoe.
A great experience for young and old, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad operates on original railways and maintains two open routes. The Historic Route is the most popular and runs seven daily trips from 10:30am to 4pm between May 24 and October 31. Trains start in Carson City, and tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 10 and under.
