Villa La Angostura
Perched on the northern shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, and surrounded by the forests and snow-capped peaks of the Lakelands, Villa La Angostura is nicknamed the Garden of Patagonia. Ideally situated for exploring the Argentina’s lakes and mountains, the small resort town makes a popular alternative to Bariloche.

The Basics
While many travelers opt to stay in Villa La Angostura, a visit to the town also makes a popular day trip from Bariloche or San Martín de los Andes. Admire Alpine-style wooden buildings, browse the handicrafts shops, or enjoy outdoor activities around the town’s two lakes, Nahuel Huapi and Correntoso.

La Angostura also serves as the gateway to two of the region’s most famous attractions: the scenic Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Route of the Seven Lakes) runs from here to San Martín de los Andes, and the Los Arrayanes National Park, renowned for its ancient Arrayán (Chilean myrtle) forests, lies just to the south.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There are plenty of options for accommodation, restaurants, and shops in Villa La Angostura.
  • It’s easy to get around the town on foot and for travelers in wheelchairs and with strollers.
  • It can get cool in the Lakelands, even in the summer months, so it’s worth packing warm clothing for the evening hours.

How to Get There
Villa La Angostura lies on the north shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, around 52 miles (84 kilometers) or a 1.5-hour drive from Bariloche on the south shore. The closest international airport is in Bariloche; most long-distance buses also arrive here. Regular buses run by Andesmar connect the two towns and take around 1.5 hours.

When to Get There

Villa La Angostura gets busy during the summer months of December to February, when advance booking of accommodation and tours proves essential. For winter visitors, the main ski season on Cerro Bayo runs from July to September.

Outdoor Activities Around Villa La Angostura

With easy access to the lakes of Nahuel Huapi and Correntoso; the national parks of Nahuel Huapi and Los Arrayanes; and the Andes mountains, Villa La Angostura serves as the gateway to outdoor activities in Patagonia. In summer, take a boat cruise around the islands of Nahuel Huapi; enjoy fishing, kayaking, and other water sports along the lakes; take a horseback ride or ATV excursion; or hike to hidden waterfalls. In the winter months of June through September, head to the nearby Cerro Bayo ski resort for skiing and snowboarding.
