It wasn't a well organized tour at all. Nobody spoke English. Lots of misleading information: walking was along the railroad for 4 hours not hour and a half, no restrooms, some areas we had to walk on a narrow rail above the river 10-15 feet down. Minivan came 2 hours later than it was supposed to. Driver picked up more tourists and got in a verbal fight with one tourist. Late at night the driver brought us to police station accusing of not paying for the ride! We were still 3-4 hours away from Cusco. All that was a shocking experience considering that I was 5 months pregnant, it made it even worse. After our return to the U.S. we complained to Viator and they refunded us for this tour. I would recommend Viator in all other tours we booked here, but definitely not that one.
We booked the 2-Day Tour to Machu Picchu By Minivan from Cusco through Viator which was a big mistake and Viator fully refunded us after the horrible experience. The tour operator listed on our confirmation was Esteban Adventure Agencia de Operadora de Turismo. I have had some cool travel opportunities on multiple continents and this stands out as the worst tour I have ever done.
We found it hard to get information online about visiting Machu Picchu. The official website for making the bookings was having technical difficulties and much of the information was in Spanish. We decided to book an overnight guided tour to Machu Picchu through Viator since we thought it would make the visit less complicated. Viator falsely listed on their website Our Product Managers select only the most experienced and reliable operators in each destination, removing the guesswork for you, and ensuring your peace of mind. So far from true and more stress on this trip than any other vacation.
The company was horrible at communicating and did not actually provide guides for the guided tour. For example, they provide van transportation to the Hydroelectric station but then leave you on your own to walk 2-3 hours along the train track to Aguas Calientes. There is an option to book a train for 31 each way but none of this was communicated prior to trip ie the train to Aguas Calientes and bus to Machu Picchu are not listed in the exclusion section on the Viator website. Either way you are required to carry your luggage either walking or on the train for an additional charge. I would think that should have been communicated on the website or at the very least during the tour confirmation communication. When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you have to find a plaza on your own and wait there to be given further instruction ie your hotel name when you are then on your own to find it. The private van with only 15 people turns into a gathering of more than 50 people. Totally chaotic and a big waste of time and money. When you complain to the guides about the information not being provided properly on the Viator website or in the confirmation and they take no responsibility since they are contractors. I dont have a suggestion of which company to use but please dont waste your time and money with this unprofessional group.
