Wonderful watery adventure.

Although I’m not a great swimmer (and so was a little nervous when booking) this was a fabulous trip. The staff were so lovely. I can’t remember the ladies name (sorry - but she was from Canada originally). Very attentive and safety conscious. They hit that fine balance and we had a wonderful day. We were lucky that the turtles seemed to be there waiting for us and our guide encouraged them to move around our party so everyone was able to share in this amazing experience. I’d never snorkelled before and again that was amazing. I trusted the words of the guy fitting my equipment- ‘This is not your day! I’ll be there to save you if needed!’ 😆 just do it! We did the 3 hour trip and our driver even gave us a little guided tour on the way back to the hotel. Only thing to top it? An hour shopping in Holetown.

This was an amazing day trip. We opted into the 5 hour trip after initially thinking it would be too long and it was worth it! Our 11 year old daughter had an amazing time. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The lunch was delicious!

We had a true lunch wonderful day out on the catamaran with El Tigre. We enjoyed both the turtle and shipwreck snorkelling stops. Some nice corals and a few nice shoals of fish on them both. Our glasses were never empty, the food was excellent and plentiful. There was a great bunch of folks on the boat and we have made new friends. Highly recommended trip whilst in Barbados.

I want to leave a fair review, and perhaps manage expectations of anyone who may be blinded by the 5-star aura. First, and this is very important: when they say in their directions to meet at "Gate 1", we almost did not find it. I take 'gate' to mean either something that sheep go through, or an entrance. But what they mean is that there's a bunch of counters outside where the tour buses and taxis are waiting, and there's one with a '1' on it. So they mean Counter #1. Unlike other tours, there wasn't anyone with a sign, and we were there early, as well as walked/searched vigorously. It's only through God's graces and the helpfulness of humanity (not ALL humanity, mind you) that we were able to locate the El Tigre driver before he was about to drive off. The pier to dock was not that far away, but traffic was a bit gnarly. We signed waivers and waited a few minutes to board, waiting around for quite a few more minutes before other pax arrived, and we shoved off (no communication in the mean time about the waiting, or when we're expecting to sail - that would have been nice). The catamaran was spacious, and the staff were very accommodating, ensuring that everyone was consistently plied with drinks, even offering a basket of baked goods around - so, no complaints there. We soon went flying off, past the cruise port, and that was arguably the best part of this whole thing, wind and salty splashes in our face. Did that for, what 20 minutes maybe, and then we turned, and went back to from where we came, past the cruise port... to weigh anchor at a place pretty close by, where we went for the 'wreck' dives. Again, if they made the announcement that this was the plan - to go sailing off and then come back the original way, I didn't hear it; for a second when we turned back, I thought the whole snorkeling thing was off! Again, better communication would have been better. The first wreck was a little boat, the second, slightly bigger in about maybe 20 ft. of water. There were some fishes everywhere, but visibility was not very good. Plus, this was JUST before all the social distancing became fashionable, cuz there must have been another 3 or 4 catamarans with like-minded snorkelers nearby. As well, you don't have very much leeway when we're snorkeling - you stay with the group, for 'safety' I guess (more like liability). So you have equal chance of kicking someone in the face and knock their mask off, or being the kick-ee. Then it was off to see our turtle friend - and I mean that, cuz, this guy (there was supposed to be more than one, but we saw just the lone turtle) was so familiar with the leaders in our group aka the hand that feeds you, they could have done a secret hand-shake. Water was arguably even less visible, and yes, the same other groups around us, and the same you-can't-wander-off-on-your-own. But hey - I got to swim with the turtle! After that, we were let off at the same beach (from which you can swim to go see the turtle), since we were on the short tour of 3 hours - others on the 5-hour thing got lunch, and you can read other reviews in here about that. All in all, it was not bad value for money compared to the other things available, particularly compared to what your cruise line offers (2x/3x more money, same or similar experience). But if you're looking for something more exclusive and special, you'd have to look elsewhere, and be prepared to pay more. Hope that helped.

Thanks for your review we appreciate your feedback. I would like to address a few of your comments. Your experience finding Gate 1 is one we have not heard anyone describe to be that difficult before. The uniformed staff in the port are very friendly. You could have asked a question and they would have showed you Gate # 1. If you were early and we gave you a time of 9:30 am to meet at Gate # 1, chances are your driver was not there yet and that’s why you couldn’t find anyone with a sign. The driver is usually there from 9:30 am (he has to pickup from hotels first usually 8:30 to 9:00 am to drop off those guests to the dock first, then he comes to the Port at Gate # 1 for 9:30 am). If he is leaving without a guest on his list he has to call it in to the office first or directly to me. We don’t allow him to leave any earlier than 9:50 am if he is waiting on guest. This leaves 20 minutes for those guests that get confused or are running late because the ship disembarkation process was difficult. After 20 years I have never had anyone describe it to be that difficult to understand which gate is Gate # 1. We are very glad you enjoyed the sailing part of the tour as for guests who like sailing these catamarans are great sailing vessels, and we try to sail and not motor if we can avoid it. In the morning just around departure one of the crew members would have given a safety briefing (sometimes guests don’t pay attention even when we ask them to). In this briefing the plan of the day is explained. That plan can be slightly different from one day to the next (all depends on conditions: visibility, sea conditions, choppy water at normal anchorage areas etc.). On the day of your cruise the plan was to go sailing first and come back to the snorkeling sights. The reason for this is because there was a swell coming from the northerly direction which causes shore break waves along the west coast. What this means is that all the tours that day are all going to rush into Carlisle Bay to snorkel as it’s the only place left with any visibility. So we try to stagger the visits to the snorkeling by going sailing first (which lets the other tours who don’t have an interest in how busy it gets to go snorkel first) then we come back after most of the traffic is gone. You mentioned there were 3 or 4 other boats however if we did it the other way around (snorkel first then sail) it could have been 13 to 15 boats at the snorkeling. So we try our best. When we have 4 cruise ships off loading 3,000 passengers each, making approximately 12,000 people here for one day, everywhere is busy. We don’t own the snorkeling site and can’t tell other operators not to snorkel there at the same time we are. And the fact that visibility was not great tells me that visibility was zero at the other locations causing all the operators to come to the same spot on your day. Visibility is outside of our control. What we can control is to take you to the place that has the best possible visibility on your day. You should see the visibility this last week, it is 95% to 100% but now there are no tourists here to experience it due to the pandemic. The majority of tourists come here in January to April and these are the months when visibility for snorkeling is unpredictable. It can be great one day and poor the next. All the snorkeling sites are close to shore on this island, there is no snorkeling off shore like what can be found in other places. This also contributes to visibility issues when there is a swell running. It causes the sand on shore to stir up and being close to shore can get cloudy very quickly once the swell starts. We can only work with what mother nature gives us. We are sorry that the visibility was not the greatest on the day you went and I get the sense that this was a big disappointment for you. I can totally understand that and wish we could have great visibility on all our tours. I will have talks with the guides about the way they are keeping the snorkeling groups together. It sounds like they are being too regimented with this part of the tour. I will also have talks with them about the importance of good communication. Although I know that some of what was described in your review was in the safety briefing given before you leave the dock I will still speak to them about the importance of keeping people informed. Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry that your experience was not 5 star.
