Booking was easy. Getting to the Railway from the Cruise Ship was expensive and rushed. Who knew we would be that far from the Railway Station? Otherwise, good trip, met some nice people. Was sometimes a tad boring...you need background music, maybe maori songs, and some reference to the Indigenous people in that area, rather than just the white settlers. The Market should sell Kiwi food, ie: sausage sizzles or Bacon and Egg Rolls, instead of tourist items that you can get in Dunedin. Let people know to take cash, so we can donate to the busker and her dog. otherwise, was good!! Thanks
Lovely old Dunedin Station is in keeping with the character of the trip.
The carrages have been beautifully restored but are still comfortable with suttle modern additions.
The trip through the Taieri Gorge was absolutely spectacular and with the added bonus of a sunny day.
I highly recommend the Taieri Gorge Railway trip. It is a fantastic way to observe some amazing scenery. I spent most of the trip standing out on the balcony at the back of the train. Four hours of a sunny Saturday afternoon very well spent!
The seating on the train was shocking - there were 3 of us travelling together and we were given 3 seats in Car R. We couldn't get a good view out of one lot of windows as 1/4 of that window was blocked by a servery - when we asked why the servery was there it is because it is used when the train is hired out for the cruise ship passengers.
Absolutely the worst organised tour of our entire trip. In fact I don't think we have ever experienced anything worse. A complete waste of money. In fact there is more information and commentary provided about the landscape when travelling on the suburban commuter trains in Sydney. Absolutely NO commentary in the train so you dont know where you are or what you're looking at. Wouldnt have a clue. It was just a train ride to a stop after a couple of hours so stall holders at a market in the middle of god know's where can peddle their goods. Coffee machine broke in the cafe car and ran out of food - sandwiches etc on the outbound trip - within the first hour!! Every person on our trip should have had their money handed back to them as it was nothing more than a 4 hour train ride with no information whatsoever.
We had a bad trip. The scenery was magnificent but the PA system failed and therefore no commentary. The coffee machine wouldn't work, the cash register failed and one of the staff was very rude when my friends wife complained. The fact that there was no commentary spoiled the experience as we didn't know what various places were all about. The toilet in our carriage didn't work and the one in the next carriage stank. The two toilets at the top of the gorge stank and were not sufficient for the number of passengers on the trian before ua nor our train.
