This tour was very interesting especially if you have limited time to explore this part of Portugal. I liked all the places we visited including Alcobaça. Our guide Louisa, explained very well in English, Portuguese and French. Worth visiting.
I like all the places we visited but I was under the impression, based on the description, that we will be visiting Óbidos first and Fátima last, which is the main reason I booked this trip and not the others similar to it as those tours were starting off at Fátima. It's possible that they changed the order of the trip since we went there on May 12 and they were expecting more Fátima pilgrims to be around later in the day. I would have appreciated a heads up.
If it hadn't been for the wonderful places included in this tour, I would have given it a "Terrible" rating. Disorganized is an understatement for this trip. We were asked to stand in line at the meet up point for awhile before we were able to get on the bus. After a few minutes, they asked all the Portuguese-speaking people to get off the bus and transfer as the group is too big (they couldn't have worked this out from the roster beforehand?). Isabel, our tour guide, was so underwhelming. She was soft-spoken and taking in monotone, mostly in Spanish. After the lunch stop at Nazare, she did not give us a clear instruction as to where our meeting point was going to be. Most of us ended up wandering about under the sun (it was 34C that day), unaware where the meeting point is and when the bus is coming. The only saving grace is that they dropped everyone off at their hotel/preferred drop off point. I recommend doing this trip but under another company.
We were very disappointed with this tour. Firstly it implied a smaller group than it was. Instead of just an English group we were combined with a French Spanish and Portuguesas group. The tour guide spent her time focussed on the Portuguese speaking group and when walking us to a site did not take time to ensure everyone was able to see where she was going. At one stop even though she counted us twice she almost left one tourist behind. Finally, because of the lack of efficiency by the company we did not leave at 9:00 and therefore we were rushed through the sites in order to get back at the scheduled time. While I would recommend seeing these places I would definitely look for a different tour company.
This was a great way to visit these charming towns. Although it was raining when we visited Obidos, it was a beauitful village!
Fatima was awesome! Try to get the schedule of masses ahead of time so that you can incorporate it into your tour.
All lovely and beautiful places to see!
Let me first say that the towns visited on this tour are exceptional and well worth taking. The included meal we paid for was excellent.
I have taken over twenty tours with Viator and their local providers have always been excellent. This tour was the exception. Our tour guide Isabel was terrible. I have been on many trips that were bi-lingual and I do not mind that. But, Isabel could barely be heard or understood. She spoke in a monotone and gave little in the way of directions or suggestions. When asked a question she would either not answer or be very rude in answering. On most other tours I have taken, the tour guide would make an effort to get brochures of the site and hand out one to each person. This could have easily been done in Fatima for instance. Even if she didn't get the brochures, she could have pointed out the information office which we discovered a half hour later. Instead she just took us to the main plaza and said she would meet us back at the bus in one hour. This is just one example at one of 5 towns on the tour. I have never written a bad review on a guide but I would not want others to have our same experience. It was as if she did not want to be doing the trip that day.
One other concern was the driver of the bus could not figure out how to get the condensation off of the inside of the windshield. He spent most of the first six hours wiping the windshield with his hand while driving. This is a real safety issue. He seemed to figure it out on the trip back to Lisbon.
I also do not feel that dropping us off four blocks from our hotel pick up point, in the rain, is a proper way to end the trip.
I emailed the local tour director after the trip and she quickly responded. She had no excuse for the tour guide but did indicate that this was the first time that the driver had driven this bus and was not aware how to run the AC unit. This company was very good pre trip in regards to communication. It just all fell apart the day of the trip.
