Great experience...saw a perfect view of volcano after arriving and seeing fog which lifted very quickly.Coffee plantation was beautiful, the butterfly garden was a special treat and we learned some interesting information on the coffee bean. The rainforest was absolutely beautiful and the animals so adorable. The grounds were so we'll planned out and the sight if 3 waterfalls made for some great pictures. Our guide was so informative and friendly!!
Volcano summit is about an hour's drive from San Jose but with hotel pickups it can take 2 hours. There is a stop at a souvenir shop on the way up, and another stop on the way down to divide the tour group into those continuing on the coffee plantations and those on the half day tour. Note that the half day return ride is on a different bus and has to wait for several tours to deliver their half day people to the souvenir shop. It can also take up to 2 hours as San Jose is a large place. The time at the volcano is limited so there's normally only time for 15 mins at the active caldera and another 15 mins at the inactive caldera separated by a 15 minute up hill walk. The museum is small and only takes 5 minutes, but for those who prefer to explore by themselves there's almost no opportunity to see anything else there's a larger path, due to the time constraint of about an hour at the mountain top. There were also a couple of photo stops on the way up. Overall interesting, but nothing spectacular, and the positioning of the various viewing points at the summit mean that you can only see the calderas, there are no views out over Costa Rica from the top.
We thoroughly enjoyed this trip however disappointed we weren't able to see the volcano due to the rain clouds. They can't guarantee sighting so you have to take a chance on this trip and hope to see it.
The fog blocked our view if the volcano. We are from San Francisco and felt the pain of visitors who come to see the golden gate bridge and leave disappointed when the bridge is blocked by thick fog. We only had selected 1/2 day of this tour so we were felt leaving empty! Our tour guide was great and spoke both fluent Spanish and English. I would recommend this tour and would combine with something else.
Bring a poncho and dress appropriately! Tour is scheduled in the morning and can be cold and foggy not see a single thing, NOT ONE!. Tour guide is friendly and extremely informative, however. He gave enough background information and provided enough attention to participants to make up for the lack of natural beauty.
