So. A romantic valentine's package for two costing £226. Start with the pick up from a local taxi rank that was 25 minutes late. I only received a courtesy call 2 minutes before its arrival. Victor the guide was great. Friendly and knowledgeable with an impressive command of many languages, and, what turned out to be gallows humour.
Whatever could go wrong did go wrong. The cable car ride to tiede's summit for the sunset was cancelled. Supposedly because of wind but there was no wind and the cars were running (albeit without passengers).
So a drive round to a lower vantage point. The views were initially breathtaking but the sun soon descended into a dust cloud hanging over the whole island. So no sunset. Just grey sky.
The 'taste of the canarys' meal was good but most of the talk was about the fact that no stars were visible. And so it proved. You could see more star any regular night outside of a city. The guide was sweet, and used his impressive laser pointer (the highlight of the trip!) To point out where stars would usually be and tell us Greek myths about the constellations that were partially visible.
To cap it all the door on the bus was faulty and on the ride home banged on the side of the bus with the force of a sledgehammer.
All in all very bad luck marred a 'premium' price experience that we had to laugh off.
Next time I would rent a car and a telescope. Or see if the local astronomy clubs do tours.
A lovely evening. Well organised and thorough enjoyed this experience. Our guide for the stargazing section, Adrian was exceptional. He was very knowledgeable and passionate and made the whole experience very interesting and enjoyable!!
We booked this event and although we were disappointed as the cable cars were cancelled due to high winds the sunset and star Gazing was fabulous. The guides were very informative. The only downside was that we spent so long on the coach we were picked up first and dropped off last which made it a long evening. Also it would of been good advice to bring drinks and also snacks as it’s a long event although we did have a coffee later on. Regarding footwear it is advisable not just to have comfortable shoes but ones were you are able to hill walk in although they don’t have to be hiking boots.
We had a great evening on the tour. We were picked up at our hotel and taken to the cable car station. Once at the top there is a short hike to the viewpoint to watch the sunset. The view was incredible. After sunset we descended to the cafe for a snack. At nightfall the guides take you out and give you an overview of the stars which is really interesting! We also got to use telescopes for a better look. A must do in tenerife!
From start to finish this was an excellent and informative tour. The bus was German and English. Our guide, victor, was very knowledgeable and there was plenty of time for photos. The cable car was a great experience and watching that sunset from a volcano was special. The cafe was well stocked with good food and drinks. Loved the star gazing and given the amount of people was well organised and waiting was minimal to see through the 4 telescopes set up on different stars. It is colder than you think up the volcano so dress very warm.
We were very pleased with this experience. Even tough the cablecars were closed due to high winds 80 km/h, we viewed the sunset from the Observatory, and that was just as spectacular. Got to see Teide in front of the sunset. Since the cablecars were closed, we were given the option to ride them the next day, early in the morning 9 am, which we highly recommend.. Less people and lines.
Our driver and guide picked us up on time, were highly knowledgable, and friendly. They told facts about the park on our drive to and from the Observatory.
The dinner, held at the cablecars facilities, was good, but service was a little slow. We were extremely hungry.
The best part was the stargazing. We were lucky and the skies were clear, and it gave an extremely good view of the Milky Way. Our astronomer gave us a chance to look in their telescopes and showed us the constellations.
After that, we were dropped of at our hotel Parador del Teide, and we couldn't help looking at the starts for a few more hours..
Unfortunately, due to wind, the cable car was not operating on the day of our excursion but the rest of the trip up the mountain was fabulous. Watching the sunset was the highlight of the tour and the food afterwards was excellent and plentiful. Looking at the stars and moon was also incredible. Well recommended.
Great tour! Loved the actual experience of the volcano scenery. The bus ride was quite long and our bus broke down...leaving us stranded for 40 minutes until another bus showed. Also, due to ice we weren't able to take the cable car. I think this is one of the best things to do in Tenerife. Wish everything had gone to plan for our trip though!
