Our calligraphy tour was a relaxing and peaceful experience all around. It was held in a cosy Japanese styled room that overlooked a small pond, giving it a homely feel. Our teacher was a very kind person, and she began by introducing the origins of the Japanese writing system and the important kanji characters that make up the system that is used to this very day. She gave us a variety of characters to choose from that we would paint with a set of calligraphy brushes and an ink-stone and left us to draw a character of our choice. When you draw with the calligraphy brush, there is a lot of creative freedom involved, from a gentle and light stroke that fades with a grey gradation, to a solid and bold stroke with no other colour save black. At the very end of the course, we were treated to a small session where we get to have a character inscribed on a small stone that you can use as a personal stamp, and what better work to stamp other than your own calligraphy artwork?
It was a wonderful session, and the teacher is a very kind and gentle person. I highly recommend it.
