The tour is a 5-star event, but the logistics of meeting up with our guide subtracted from an otherwise great experience. First the bad - I booked this tour because it had an option to pick us up at our hotel. I put the hotel and the address in the computer when I booked the tour. But the website did not have an option to pick a start time although several options were listed. So I called the local tour company to set up a start time. While I was talking to the agent she confirmed our hotel information and told us that our guide would meet us at the public toilets at 1pm. Not being familiar with the area around our hotel, I assumed there were public toilets nearby and they would be easy to find. After 30 minutes of looking for the pickup point I got a text from our guide asking if we were near the meeting place on the island of Venice! She said we were supposed to meet her near the Grand Canal on Venice. We were on the mainland at Mestre at this point. It took us another 40 minutes to get to the train station in Mestre and get to Venice. I feel like there were chances on either the website or when I talked to the tour company to clarify the pickup location or tell me they did not pick up on the mainland. I feel I paid for something I didn't get with the hotel pick up. The guide later told me they don't pick up on the mainland.
But the tour was great. By far the best way to see Venice. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The views were spectacular and we now have a much greater appreciation for Venice than if we had tried to walk and see the sights on our own. The Murano glass tour was also fascinating its a family business since the mid 1300's.The only downside to the glass tour is that maybe too much time is spent in their gallery - the art work is beautiful but we spent too long in their many showrooms.
I would give it 5 stars except for the confusion over the hotel pickup. Make sure you clarify that important detail and you'll have a great time!
My family and I took this trip in December 2017, we were really lucky with the weather, with the day being cold and bright. The trip down the grand canal with the expert guide was excellent, we all learned so much about the history of varrious areas and buildings lining the grand canal. It is a great way to get to know Venice an the major attractions like st Marks. The trip to the Murano glass works was the second part of the tour, during the trip over to the island you get some excellent views of Venice and in the distance the Alps. At the glass works you get an up close and personal demonstration of glass blowing which is excellent. The only down side is the visit to the glass shop afterwards, there are some excelent glass art works, however the price of the items in most cases are well over 1,000. Some of the pieces are over 100,000. However there is no pressure to buy, but you are followed very closely during your visit which I did not appreciate.
An excellent experience with a highly talented guide. The best way to see Venice is by boat and this tour did not disappoint. Our guide had an excellent grasp of the history and really brought the place to life. Murano glass experience was superb and watching a master glass maker at work was unforgettable.
