Got pushed to 11 am train, train was delayed, 1st class, beautiful views

This experience way too expensive. Book your tickets early (30 days before the trip) at the official Sri Lankan Railways page and it will be so much cheaper. But if you are late like we were, this is an option to still get the tickets.
Although be aware: Your tickets will only be bought the day of you departure, and they buy up tickets that other people cancelled. So it is no guarantee that you get the ticket at the selected time. We booked a ticket for the 8.47 am train and asked the local provider multiple times if this would work out, to which they always said "yes, don't worry". But in the end, we were moved to the 11 am train, because they couldn't get tickets for the 8.47 am train.
Furthermore we got tickets in 1st class instead of the promised 2nd or 3rd class, which has aircon, but the windows can't be opened. This worked out for us well in the end, because 2nd and 3rd class was cramped and would probably have been uncomfortable for the 8 hours we were on the train. In the end we apprechiated the aircon, even tough we were a bit bummed at first. But even in 1st class you still have the option to go to the open train doors at any time, to take some cool shots of the train.
All in all, it was a very long day, as we got up expecting to go on the 8.47 am train, and the 11 am train was delayed by 1 hour and got even further delayed while we were on it, so we only arrived in Ella by 8 pm, when it was already dark outside. But it was still a nice experience.

Information you have mentioned is correct and that's the normal procedure of making the reservation. Only a small percentage of travelers get a chance to secure seats through the online system and mostly we serve the travelers like you who have missed the opportunity to obtain a seat. There is a difference in the face price of the ticket and the selling price since we keep our margin for the service we offer.

Viator = scam

Viator is a scam. Our 34€ ticket was never refunded even though the ticket could never be paid because of the current social problems. No response to my messages. I strongly advise against using this application, no after sales service.

I assume you have a problem with receiving the refund from viator for a cancelled trip. Normally viator processes refunds without any delays if you follow the steps correctly. Kindly contact them through their customer care chat service. You will receive a response from them for sure.

Had a great time on the train from Kandy to Ella - it was great to see Sri Lanka’s beauty during the 6 hour journey. Everyone is looking out of the window for a reason! There are vendors selling refreshments so you won’t be short and the rail staff are helpful getting bags on and off and also letting you know which coach you are in. Mahaweli Tours and Holidays helped us sort the tickets and dropped them off to the hotel in a timely manner and were also on hand to help out with questions we had about the journey!

I was able to communicate with the company through WhatsApp straight after purchasing my ticket right through until departing on the train.
The ticket was delivered on the day of travel at 7am and was a reserved 2nd class seat. Much more relaxing train journey than if I'd gone unreserved.

Good last resort if you’re in a time pinch. The train tickets from the station are only R400 so if you plan ahead, you can pay that price. The company promised to deliver it the night before departure and didn’t end up handing it to me until 6AM the day of departure. So if you are an anxious person, this might not be the best route. However I did get a reserved seat as promised.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and experience here. Yes. Tickets are available at the station at the face price for anybody who can buy the tickets 30 days prior to the travel date. Otherwise you can buy unreserved tickets at anytime at the station and it's not guaranteed that you receive the tickets.
For the reservations we receive in advance we deliver the tickets on the previous day to to the hotel. But for the reservations received just few days prior to the travel date, tickets will be delivered on the same day by 6.00 am and we always inform the customers about it and we do it as promise.
Once again thank you very much for choosing us and happy to hear that you made the scenic train journey as planned.

Because of the local holidays, all trains were booked but Mahaweli Tours obtained tickets and delivered them to our hotel ... in the neighbouring city. Very nice and efficient. The train ride was, as expected, smooth and spectacular!

Wer abgezogen werden...

Wer abgezogen werden möchte, kann sich die Tickets gern kaufen. Am örtlichen Bahnhof gibt es die Tickets für 3.50€ inklusive der Sitzreservierung anstatt für 17€ pro Person (und das auch noch für die 3.te Klasse!!!)
Und ja, die Tickets sind auch noch am Abreisedatum Bahnhof in Kandy zu erwerben !! Wir wurden einfach betrogen

Danke für Ihre Rückmeldung. Die von Ihnen geposteten Informationen sind tatsächlich korrekt. Ja, Sie können an Ihrem Reisedatum am Bahnhof normale Tickets zu diesem Preis kaufen. Sie können jedoch an Ihrem Reisedatum keine Tickets mit reserviertem Sitzplatz kaufen, da viele Tickets 30 Tage im Voraus ausverkauft sind Ihr Reisedatum. Das haben wir auch in der Produktbeschreibung erwähnt.
Für "reservierte" Sitzplätze, über Was wir verkaufen, sind reservierte Sitzplatztickets. Aber nicht reservierte Sitzplätze (die Sie am Bahnhof kaufen können) sind viel billiger.
