  • Natuurlijke site alleen toegankelijk tijdens rondleiding

Well worth it

When in Iceland, there are many things to do. In our 4 short days there, we chose this tour as one of our adventures. It was well worth the trip. We were promptly picked up 1 block away from our hotel at bus stop #6 and transferred to a bus depot where we got on a bigger bus. The ride took about 45 minutes to get to the Lava cave. Upon arrival we went inside the main building to be fitted with a helmet with a light, crampons, and instructions. After about 15 minutes, we were on our way. The walk to the cave was short but the use of the crampons were definitely needed as the path was slippery. At no point did I feel I was in any danger along the walk. The inside of the caves are absolutely beautiful. It is naturally lighted by 4 natural "skylights" as well as artificially lit by inside lighting. The helmet light was not needed although helped out for sure footing and an extra flash for photography. The guide we had was well informed and very personable. She told us the history about the caves and it made for a well rounded tour. We stopped in several locations to point out the features of the cave. At the end of the path, we stopped and they shut our all the lights as we stood in total darkness. The darkness and the silence was very relaxing. We took beautiful pictures while inside the cave. Please note that even though it was not raining outside, there are large drops of water that seep through the cracks and you will get wet some so it is advisable to wear a raincoat and to protect the back of your neck as you will be watching your footing and get a big drop on you! But that also makes for the fun. While I did not find the trail terribly challenging, I would advise parents to hold onto their children and the elderly to hold onto their children. Anyone with normal walking challenges should probably not do this tour due to the icy conditions. I do not know how it is in the summer as we went in December. I read some complaints about the distance that you get to go into the cave. This is not mile long, hands and knees, no light, repelling, bat infested, cave tour. This to me is a nice family adventure out with just the right amount of challenge to be fun for everyone.

This was a fun, informative tour. The guide was great in explaining how the lava cave was formed and what each groove, color, structure meant. The tour itself took about an hour only out of the 3 hour trip. It took about 45 minutes to get there, 15 minutes for gear and safety instruction and the about an hour of the actual tour. Got back to Reykjavik around 12:30 from a 9am start time. We went in mid Jan so there was ice and snow in the beginning of the cave. Was a bit slippery with the ice but that just adds the the adventure! There is a built walkway path soon after you get down into the cave.

Our guide was great and this was a super experience. Much more color than I expected with all the lichen, moss, and bacteria on the walls of the caves. It was a fun experience, though would be challenging for those unsteady on their feet.

My fiance and I had a lot of fun on this tour. Our guide walked us through the tunnel providing descriptions of how the lava shapes the rocks and tunnel. We would recommend this tour to everyone.

The tour itself is very cool and worth taking. However, the voucher I received from viator gave me the wrong tour time. It gave me the time of 11am when in reality the tour actually left at 10am. Thankfully I got to the bus stop early and asked the desk about exactly where I was supposed to meet which is when they told me about the mistake and I thankfully made it to my bus with about five mins to spare. Would have been very upset if I missed this tour due to the time being incorrect.
