This excursion is a must. If you’re like me, the thought of getting up at 4am is the worst. I promise you the early access is worth it. We arrived to Chichen Itza around 8am and there was barely anyone there (the vendors selling souvenirs weren’t even set up yet). We split I to two groups, those who wanted the tour in English and those who wanted it in Spanish. Frank was out tour guide on the bus and for the English speaking group. He was amazing! When we first got there they gave us 10 minutes to get photos before people started showing up. I got great pictures in front of the large pyramid with no one in the background! Frank was super knowledgeable and funny at the same time. We spent a little over 2 hours with him telling us the history and pointing out the architecture. Then we had about an hour of free time. I’m sure others liked the free time but I found myself missing the knowledge that Frank had when I was alone. There are tons or local vendors lining the site - I didn’t find any of them to be too pushy and I liked the idea of purchasing from the locals. The only part I would say I disliked was on the way back we were told that we would be making a stop at a souvenir shop to use the bathroom and to shop. We spent 25 minutes here and you could tell we were only here because the tour company made a deal with this shopping center. 25 minutes felt like a long time, especially after most of us were exhausted from spending the past 3 hours in the heat. They did have bathrooms, but requested donations to use it. Frankly, they should have just called it a fee because you had to give them something to be allowed to use the restroom.Overall, even with the last stop this tour is a total must. Avoid the crowds and go early. Ramon, our driver, was awesome and I can’t say enough about Frank. Some of us purchased Mayan Calendars that represented a specific date and on the way back Frank took the time to thoroughly explain to everyone who bought one what it meant and what all the symbols meant. Definitely would recommend.
