Overzicht

Watching the sunrise and pre-dawn colors was a sight like none other on top of Haleakala. It was freezing and uncomfortable at times so bring many layers, warm scarf and a warm hat. I was so nervous for bike ride down hearing many different things (plus I hadn’t rode a bike in several years. It was a little scary at first because you go quite fast down the mountain! However it became so fun and exhilarating after the first mile or so. I recommend it as long as you know how to ride a bike!!

Yes, you have to get up early but it’s well worth it. They get you up there before the big crowd so you have a great spot and the bike ride down was awesome!

Guides were great, scenery was awesome, unfortunately at the fault of no one but mother nature, we couldn't see the Sunrise due to the Vog from the other island but it was still really nice and chilly...burrrrr The ride down was super easy and didn't require much effort. I'd say if someone in your group has small hands or cannot operate an adult road bike that it's probably not a great option for them to come. We had someone on our tour that had issues the entire way down and it slowed the rest of the group down and required many stops not to mention there was one time where she literally almost flew over the side after losing control of the bike.

This is a great tour. The bikes are high quality -- heavy, with good breaks. Our drivers and guides went out of their way to ensure that everyone was having a good time and staying safe. Make sure you dress warm for the morning. We stood on top of the mountain for over an hour in high 30 degree weather with wind in July. They give you a jacket, but if you're otherwise dressed for Hawaii, it is not enough. I'd bring a second coat and pants and maybe a blanket or two. During the ride down, our guide stopped and found a chameleon for us to take pictures with. One of the highlights of my time in Maui.

Very early 1am pickup in order to make it to the sunrise with time, amazing experience. It definitely take warm clothes chill wind factor absolutely freezing. Unfortunately we felt we waited for the sunrise and as it began had to leave. Bike ride down the hill was wonderful though, through small local towns, very easy to do minimal pedalling, breakfast stop and photo opportunities along way with nice beach view at the end. Very relaxing coasting down. Back to hotel in time for lazy afternoon after early start.

Tamara, our driver, and Alvin, our lead bike and guide, were great. They had the utmost concern for our safety, offered an abundance of information, very supportive, enthusiastic, and made the whole experience fun.

Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate for us to see the sunrise, but it happens. I appreciated that they company had warm jackets, wind pants and gloves for us as it was rainy and very cold while we waited for the sunrise. Jo, our driver and K, our guide were great! I was a little apprehensive about the ride, but I stayed in the back and was fine. Breakfast in the little town after 18 miles of riding was great. Definitely try the donut on a stick from the local bakery. We finished at the beach and watched the surfers as Jo and K loaded up our bikes. This trip was fantastic and a must do if you're in Maui.

This was, by far, the best part of our trip. Alvin picked up up promptly at 2:45 am as promised. After a short ride, we went to Mountain Riders office where we met up with the rest of the groups, were provided a jacket and gloves, coffee, snacks and a brief description of what to expect. We loaded into a larger bus with the rest of the group and headed to the top of Haleakala. I have never seen so many beautiful stars, meteors and satellites floating in the night sky before! The views were amazing and you could almost forget that the temperatures were hovering around 35 degrees. Yes... It is cold up there, so dress appropriately. Long pants, sweaters, layers.... are needed. After watching the amazing sunrise, we began our 26.2 mile trek down Haleakala on bikes. You do stop several times on the way down the hills and thankfully, the brakes are very good on the bikes and helmets are provided for safety. Amazing trip and very thankful that we booked through Mountain Riders. Just a few things to be aware of: 1. It is VERY cold at the top of Haleakala. You are over 7,000 feet above sea level. 2. Make sure you grab a spot near the metal fence area way before sunrise so that you get a full, unobstructed view. 3. Our tour guides were great. They were funny, kept us moving and walked us through the entire process, but they don't do this for free. They work for tips just like everyone else on the island and they are not shy about suggesting the amount of tip they feel is needed. Some people were taken aback by the approach, but we were already planning on tipping since we did everywhere else on the island, so it wasn't a surprise that they would like to be tipped. Just surprised that they stated how much they thought we should be tipping. It isn't a cheap trip to take, but it is worth every penny to watch the sunrise. Absolutely magnificent and breathtaking.

The experience was once in a lifetime. It was cold and wet when we started cycling but that didn't matter, bright sunshine burst out in the last section of the bike ride. The instructor and driver were excellent, competent and made the day amazing.

A great experience that everyone should do while in Hawaii. Our guide was knowledgeable and very funny made 3 am bus ride not seem so bad. He also was very helpful biking down the hill.
