We really enjoyed spending time with Catherine. She offered a wonderful evening and conversation. As mentioned in other reviews, I agree, the food was a little ordinary and that perhaps the organisors should look at this to give the evening a proper 5 star rating as the reasons a lot of people go to Paris is for both the the wonderful food it offers as well as the culture.
We were really looking forward to this as we had done it on our previous visit a number of years ago and had a good evening. This time unfortunately our expectations were well off the mark. We had three male hosts this time two of which didn't speak any english. Great for conversation yes! They seemed nice enough but its hard to tell when you can't actually talk. A lot of the conversation went on around us not with us, most of what we did have was superficial at best. With the food the starter and desert was fine but the mains was really not to our liking. I think it was kidney, braised in some thin tasteless liquid with a little roast fennel on the side. My wife and i both tried it but couldn't eat it. Our son wouldn't even try it, couldn't blame him. The food was not the hosts fault as that is organised by someone else and delivered to them. We had brought a bottle of wine with us from Australia as a gift for the host and another to share in anticipation of an evening of conversation and wine tasting. This didn't happen. As soon as dinner was over we were clearly expected to leave straight away and our suggestion of opening a bottle of wine was met with a measure of surprise and indignation. So we left. We went and found somewhere to get some food as we were all still hungry then went back to our hotel and drank the wine ourselves. I can't speak for other peoples experience with this activity only for ours which was extremely disappointing. If and when we return to Paris again this will definitely not be on our activity list.
Mme D, my host was warm, welcoming and we had a lovely dinner at her apartment, discussing life in France today. She had so many interesting answers to many of the things I had been wondering about the city while exploring on my own. And a human connection in a city that can overwhelm the senses with all its sights and experiences is good. A great balance to all the beautiful museums, day trips, walking 12 miles plus a day sightseeing, and people trying to sell you something. I learned a lot and really enjoyed her company. The one slight difficulty was getting to her apartment. Altho the company was super responsible about confirming and giving instructions, because of my home phone carrier not connecting my smartphone reliably in Paris NOT Viator's fault I was in Paris without internet or GPS and only insecure hotel wifi. As a result, when searching for the apartment on a pouring rainy night and having trouble with the front gate lock code, I would not have made it to the dinner without hastily rushing into the locked complex after a regular resident got in. As the instructions said to. This matters because I am not the only person who has missed or almost missed a scheduled tour or event because of logistical glitches. When you are travelling, and have sensory overload and are tired, it is sometimes easier to meet a human being rather than go thru and manage other people's passcodes, etc. However, this is more about my hassle with tech on this particular visit than this event per se...I recommend this heartily.
I just loved the host and hostess of this tour. It was one of the highlights of my trip to Europe. The food was catered and just mediocre, but the company was excellent. I must beg the pardon of the host and hostess because I don't remember their names, I thought I made a note of it on my phone, but can't find it - please forgive me. They were such warm and wonderful people and very good conversationalists. Even though it was just the 3 of us, the conversation never lagged. I feel that we made a truly heartfelt connection and that is priceless...so my objective to meet true Parisians was achieved. Also, they have an excellent view of the Eiffel Tower right from their front window. It was beautiful to see it all lit up at night. I highly recommend this tour and hope you get the two hosts I had. They also have an adorable little boy.
