Mt. Fuji Climb
, jul 2019
I'm a hiker, so hiking Mt. Fuji wasn't daunting for me. What WAS daunting was figuring out what kind of equipment I'd need, how the mountain huts worked, really how it ALL worked. Climbing Mt. Fiuji is so much more commercial than backwoods backpacking and hiking here in the western US. I finally decided that to buy a tour would make it really happen rather than me wondering about how to do it. My daughter lives in Japan and my husband and I were going to visit her. Since I'm a hiker/backpacker, of course I'd want to hike Mt. Fuji while we were there! So I bought a tour with a hiking guide for myself, my husband, and my daughter. The logistics were what I needed, and that's exactly what I DIDN'T get. No communication, no list, no details. I kept reaching out to them, and any responses I got were minimal and I still had more questions. The packing list they finally sent seemed incomplete and all my questions weren't answered. It's like I could get one answer per email--and sometimes no answer. I ended up getting lots of my info just by Googling it--so what was the point of paying a guide? Anyway, between the tour company and my Googling, we ended up with the right equipment. We met the group at the trailhead instead of Tokyo (since we weren't going at all to Tokyo on our trip). The meeting place was vague and it took us an hour to find them. And then on the climb the guide made it just about impossible for us to take any pictures. He didn't even want us to walk side by side and visit--just plod along single file. The good part of the trip is that we made it up, and that we had reservations at a mountain hut. The guide was nice. My guess is that some of his "rules" are to make sure everyone could be successful in making it. The fact that we were already hikers and we live in Utah and are used to the altitude just made a lot of that unnecessary for us. We should have just done it on our own.
