Hunter Mountain
The basics
The four different slopes of Hunter Mountain are serviced by 13 different lifts. Beginner trails and most amenities like a rental shop, dining, and slopeside lodging are located near the base village in Hunter East, while lifts that service more advanced terrain are located on Hunter North and West. A snow tubing hill with a carpet lift is a great option for kids and those who prefer not to ski or snowboard.
For city dwellers yearning for a day on the slopes without the hassle of driving, private and group day trips from New York City depart regularly. Some include equipment rental packages and lift tickets. When the snow melts, summertime activities include hiking, horseback riding, golf, Jeep tours, and a zipline course.
Things to know before you go
- Score a discount on lift tickets by purchasing them in advance online or skiing midweek.
- If you have just a few hours, take advantage of discounted half-day lift tickets valid in the afternoon.
- Kids aged 6 and under ski free during the week and for a small fee on weekends. Alternatively, childcare at the base village is available for children aged 2–6 so parents can enjoy a worry-free day on the slopes.
- Ski and ride lessons for both children and adults are available from the Learning Center.
How to get there
Hunter Mountain is located in upstate New York, roughly 55 miles (90 kilometers) from Albany and 125 miles (200 kilometers) from New York City. Organized tours and multiple bus charters provide regular service from New York City. Alternatively, ride the Amtrak train to Hudson, and then take a taxi or rideshare to the mountain.

When to get there
Ski season usually runs from late November to mid-April. The slopes can get quite crowded on weekends, so visit midweek for a more relaxed experience. The Mountain Jam and Taste of Country music festivals bring the mountain back to life in summer.
Oktoberfest Weekends
While October is a shoulder season for most mountain resorts, Hunter Mountain celebrates fall with a full lineup of seasonal events every weekend of the month. Sample the bounty of harvest season with cider and wine tastings paired with German cuisine, admire the Catskills’ colorful changing leaves from the Scenic Skyride chairlift, and watch a parade of luxury European autos at the Eurocar Rally.
