My husband and I were the second couple to be collected on Tuesday 5 March for this Wine lands day tour. Ian and I ended up being squeezed into the back of this Toyota vehicle. The seats in front of us, occupied by the Canadian couple couldn't shift forward..., we had to sit sideways in order to be vaguely comfortable. The triangular window to my left was useless as it was covered by big round stickers displaying all the tourist accreditation information. It was of absolutely no value to me who wanted to see the countryside. The air conditioning didn't reach the hell hole at the back where we were sitting. I was the lucky one because the male co-tourist afforded me his seat next to his fiancee in the middle of the vehicle. Poor Ian was cooped up in an uncomfortable ball for the duration of the time spent in this blob of Toyota misery!!! I have nothing against Toyota, as it so happens I own one which I love to death!
The various wine estates were magnificent and I fell in love with the De Morgenzon estate and their Sauvignon Blanc wine. Nummy. Nummy. Nummy!
The Tour Guide elected to take us to the Delaire Graff Estate for lunch. All good and well, it's obviously a magnificent estate and beyond beautiful. The Tour Guide had us, being two South Africans and two Canadians on the tour; he could have pre-booked the Delaire Graff restaurant for the four of us, but he didn't and consequently we were forced to eat at the Indochine Restaurant, which is all very fancy and affordable for foreigners paying in whatever their appropriate currency is, surely !?!? Noumea Cuisine is all very pretty in magazines but extortionately expensive for South Africans. Ian and I had lamb cutlets, a glass of white wine each (which barely had more wine per glass than at the wine tasting) and with a tip this cost me R 1,200.00. Gert (the Afrikaans/nationalised Canadian) had a tuna salad and he battled to find the two strips of tuna, Claudette had soup, which was perfectly beyond belief when it arrived.... her face was priceless! One soup plate with islands of unknown food substances was put down in front of her and then the waiter walked around the table and poured some milky white fluid into the soup plate, which suddenly turned her experience into a soup! It was all very odd. A very expensive and interesting experience.for a South African couple.
I think I've written enough for you to ascertain our tips and possible guidelines.
Danny collected us punctually from our accomodation with his very comfortable sedan and we drove to the first winery where we had a tour of the cellars followed by wine and cheese pairing. We then drove to another winery where we discoveries Portuguese specialities which we also tasted. After a short photo stop at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Monument we continued to lunch which Danny arranged for us. We continued on to our final winery up in the Franschoek Valley before returning to Cape Town via Stellenbosch. Danny is very knowlegible in the history of South Africa and the growing of grapes. He gave us a lot of information we did not find in our guide books. His manner was very pleasant, we enjoyed this tour very much, thank you!
This was an excellant trip and great value. The most important factor about this trip was our tour director and guide CORNELIOUS SMIT.
He was excellant. We had just five on our tour, and it was just like a family sunday outing. Three Americans, Eve,Cindy, and John, and two from Scotland, plus of course Cornelious. It was a no pressure trip, it was what we wanted to do, that made it outstanding. Lunch in a beautiful garden under the trees just topped it off.
Thank you everyone for a great trip.To you Cornelious........MAGIC MOMENTS, from Christine and Eddie, in Scotland
Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and fun! We had an absolute blast and did not have to worry about a thing. Our guide arranged all the tastings and kept us on schedule without making us feel rushed. We went to 4 different vineyards: DeMorgenzon, Fairview, Mont Rochelle, and Graff Vineyards. We stopped for lunch near Mont Rochelle between vineyard 3 and 4 - which was a great recommendation from our guide. He left us to have a perfect quick bite/ lunch date before we went on to continue tasting. Could not have asked for a better day in Stellenbosch.
Tour was a waste of money. Only saw 3 wine farms, of the 5 promised. Only one of the 3 was a wine farm advertised by the company. It was very unorganized, no time was spent on the planning of the wine tastings, as no bookings were made in advance. Everything that was promised, was not delivered. In addition I had the phone the night before to try and figure out when and if we were going to be picked up, as there was no correspondence. The restaurant that was recommended highly for lunch, was terrible and not even on a wine farm. We drove in circles around the wine farms, making it clear there was no set plan. Would absolutely 100 not recommend this!!! All we did during the day, we could have done for a tenth of the price ourselves!
I highly recommend this trip and it was a most unforgettable experience. We had excellent service the entire day at all the wineries we visited. Each winery was carefully selected and we had a very well rounded Winelands visit. Thank you so much to our guide Alan who was so informative, friendly, and attentive throughout the day. This was the absolute best wine tour I've had the privilege to take in the entire world!
