Our lovely guide Cornelia was as funny and fun as the car, and the areas she took us weren't covered by any other tour. After you've done the conventional tours, try this one for an unforgettable experience.
The tour is very engaging and interesting, you learn so much and riding in the Trabant is exciting if not a little scary. Our tour guide Maciek (apologies if misspelt) was fantastic and very friendly, it was a great experience overall and I definitely recommend to anyone visiting Krakow.
The driving experience is great and completely authentic - uncomfortable, noisey plus you feel vulnerable in traffic, and the overall feeling that the 33 year old car you are travelling in may not actually make it to your destination. The guide was young and well trained, but perhaps lacked the depth of experience and knowledge than somebody that may have lived through the era would have had. Our main issue with the tour was that we were placed together with another group which negatively impacted the entire experience for us. It was hard to see why this was necessary as we had two guides, two cars and in our view was totally avoidable. A private tour should be as advertised.
TOUR OPERATOR COMMENT: Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad to hear that you liked the experience (the car, the guide and the concept). I'm sorry though that you did not feel comfortable with sharing this experience with other travelers. It happens occasionally that guides follow the same route if they meet in Nowa Huta with our guests on same tour. We look into this issue more comprehensively to avoid further unpleasant situations. Once again I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
Highlight of my trip to Krakow. I left the tour with so much new knowledge about Poland and Krakow. Our guide was very sweet and she even drove me to wherever I had to go afterwards. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who has an interest in communist Europe.
We had an AWESOME afternoon with our crazy guide Goshka !! The tour was fun , historical and interesting ! We loved everything about this tour , from driving around in the trabant and great commentary from our lovely guide ! We did the delux 4 hour trip and was worth it as we got to see an old apartment in Nowa Huta , we loved it all ! Special thanks to our CRAZY GUIDE !!! She was FABULOUS !!
If you visit Krakow and have any interest in the recent history of Poland you would be doing yourself a dis-service by not booking this tour. I highly recommend the deluxe tour as it also includes lunch in one of the legendary milkbars of the communist era. Sparse, but delicious. Also, if you have the ability to ask for a specific tour guide you must request Agnieszka Masternak. Not only is her English immaculate, but her knowledge and personal experiences of the transition from communism to capitalism made the tour and experience that much more enriching. A must if visiting Krakow.
We did the deluxe tour and I can't recommend the tour enough. It was the best thing that we did in Krakow.
What I didn't realise before I got there was that Nova Huta is a really special place and one of a handful of towns that are built in the Socialist Realist style in the former Soviet Union. It was an attempt to create a workers utopia through town planning and architecture, rather than how to build housing as cheaply as possible. As a result it had much more in common with a city like Paris than a Soviet sprawl of tower blocks.
The result was a fantastic guide taking us around an extraordinary place in a wonderful car, it was simply brilliant. The deluxe tour allowed us to see a bit more of what it was like in communist times and the lunch was delicious.
